Amanda White, Tenerife, Spain Member Since January 2010 Artist Statement Born in London, I studied art, art history and theatre design in that city, graduating as a Licentiate member of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers.
Several years in magazine illustration and graphics followed before muscling in on the writing side of things, while all the time obsessively drawing and painting - despite those newspaper deadlines.
Somewhere along the line came a move to Spain, marriage, children and a home shared with horses and many cats in the midst of banana groves (not always as idyllic as it sounds!). Writing remained a creative way of buying time to paint pictures which reflect my isolated sub-tropical rural existence here or images prompted by my frequent visits to the UK.
Shapes, patterns and rhythms ... the mark of people and animals on the landscape; the sense of place and the buildings, plants and creatures which inhabit those places, then distilling their essence into a single image is what compels me to square up to a blank canvas or sheet of paper and try to convey what I see and feel.
Nostalgia for temps perdu plays a big part in my picture-making and those old and not-so-old sketchbooks lying about the studio provide a rich quarry of memories and images.
My work has been shown in group and solo shows in the UK, Spain and the USA and can be found in private, corporate and public collections, including those of the Hogg Robinson Group, Casinos de Tenerife and the Rutherstone Collection, Manchester City Art Gallery.
I hope you enjoy viewing the contents of my galleries and perhaps even take time out to comment on what you see.
