Jenny Wright Member Since December 2011 Artist Statement The complexities and variety of the human form have always interested me a great deal. I am intrigued by the way in which light can illuminate the shapes on the face, to the way a mixture of colors can create shape and definition. I never tire of the visual stimulation the human face and body can give.
Alongside my fascination with the physical features of the body and face is a deep desire to examine and understand how we perceive each other and ourselves. How much do our preconceived notions of what we expect to see, determine what we actually see? It is these preconceived notions, whether they root themselves emotionally or socially, that I seek to challenge in my work.
I achieve this challenge not only through the use of bright and odd colors, which is evident at first glance, but also through the expressions and positions I choose to focus on. Much of my work features myself as the subject matter as I am fascinated by what the viewer is able to obtain as compared to what I intend to present. The subconscious factors at work in my art and in the viewers mind are always at play and it this playing field where my body of work rests.
