I took my first art lessons at five years old, when living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. My mother and grandmother lovingly memorialized [read, framed] some of these ‘early works,’ and so I still have a few of them. Since then, I have created art in many locations and many methods, including pastel, painting, collage, and drawing.
In New Mexico for the last 7 years, I have had the opportunity to live in various parts of the state, including Las Cruces, Taos, and now Santa Fe. I have become enchanted with New Mexico, just as the state’s tagline, “the Land of Enchantment,” implies. While my vocation of psychologist allows me some creativity with regard to interaction with my clients, I have desired a method for a more direct expression of inspiration.
The New Mexico light, colors, natural vistas, and unspoiled landscapes have inspired me just as they motivate many other artists who have traveled, worked, or lived here. The artist communities in Taos and Santa Fe have also been stimulating. I have been able to live and work around individuals who prioritize their artistic leanings, and who value their creativity. Perhaps in response to living in this artistically nurturing environment, I have recently begun to value my creative spirit and to lean toward the fine arts. I have made a decision to put more conscious energy toward clearing a space for creating art.
As an abstract artist, I believe that much of the inspiration for my work comes directly from my unconscious. In my work as a psychologist and now as a painter, I am influenced by Jung's ideas about the unconscious, the spiritual, and the collective unconscious. Jung's work and ideas eloquently capture and describe the spiritual and creative forces that help me to put paint to canvas.
