Tracy Sabin, Carlsbad, California Member Since November 2008 Artist Statement TRACY SABIN was raised in Edmonds, Washington, a small town north of Seattle. He was awarded the "Old Oregon" art scholarship from the University of Oregon in 1967. There he studied under LaVerne Krause, a distinguished Pacific Northwest printmaker. From 1968 to 1970 he lived in Italy, spending most of his time in Milan, Verona and Florence. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing in 1973. Since that time, Tracy has created illustration and design for a wide range of clients including Harcourt Brace, Turner Entertainment, Intel, Airtouch, Qualcomm, PBS, Nike and MGM. His design and illustration have been featured in How Magazine, Print Magazine, CA and Graphis. His work can be seen in a number of recent trade books on contemporary design and illustration. “Castle,” a popup book he illustrated for Sabuda and Reinhart, ranked for several weeks at #3 on the New York Times bestseller list. A San Diego resident since 1976, Tracy serves local, national and international clients in a wide variety of capacities, including corporate identity and logo design, illustration, package design, animation and mosaic and mural design and installation. His public art commissions include: the Kate Sessions fountain mosaic, using Italian smalti handcut glass, the Helen Woodward pavement mosaics, made with tumbled marble, both located at University Towne Centre in La Jolla and, most recently, a 40’x6’ mosaic mural for the San Diego International Airport titled “A Day at the Beach,” using smalti glass and tumbled marble.
