DescriptionLike a fine piece of music has the power to change our feelings and alter our emotions, an image can have the same effect. I try in my pictures to move and inspire people. My work is about being in touch with my soul and about people with their emotional and physical baggage exposed. My images are both reflection and expression in that I do not aim or plan a final picture, but instead allow myself to be found within it as it occurs. What you see is what is happening as it happens. This photograph is all collages of my own shot images that I have collected over the years. I have not used outside images to create my final product. I used Photoshop to layer them together.
Mari Pruks, Ann Arbor, Michigan Member Since April 2011 Artist Statement I have always been an image maker. Drawing and painting were activities that furnish some of my earliest childhood memories. I attended art school in Estonia since I was six years old, where I studied painting and drawing. After graduating from high school in Estonia, I studied art and photography in Finland and America . These art classes in printmaking, sculpture, graphic design and film gave me a great appreciation for images of all types, and opened my eyes to the possibilities of combining different art techniques in a single work.
Also I am passionate about psychology. I have a Masters Degree from the University of Michigan . I am currently working as a therapist part time and I am also a part time artist. I try to use both backgrounds in my photography.
My choice of subject comes from a place of intuition and is fueled by a desire to stop the moment of time or create a new moment. I use modern technology and traditional techniques or a mix of old and new in my work. I am always exploring ideas, materials and processes. My work doesn't follow a set style; rather a freedom to change and to create new tonalities of color, space and feeling. My work includes the creation of fine art prints in alternative processes such as infrared black and white as well as color digital images.
Photography has given me a way to connect to this world - a world with quiet places of beauty, places of wonder, places that make me want to hold on to them forever - and to share them with others – you.
