Brandy House, Benson Member Since December 2009 Artist Statement Brandy is a self-taught, natural artist. She has been ‘doing art’ since she was able to hold a pencil or crayon.
Brandy’s preferred subject has always been animals, wild or not and her love of the animal kingdom gives Brandy an appreciation for all types of furry friends. Brandy’s love of nature gives her a lot of material for artwork. The spectacular clouds and stormy skies of the desert landscape and Rocky Mountains, and now the special things that make up southern states are great sources for art of any kind.
Brandy learned from art classes taken in high school but had no further formal training. She learned more from watching wildlife, observing birds and flowers and other critters, including pets, in natural surroundings. The exception was the one teacher that taught Brandy shading, shadows and to not be ‘afraid of the dark’.
She has always done her best artwork with a pencil or charcoal which allows Brandy to achieve a lot of detail in simple black and white. Brandy’s watercolor paintings are not the ‘washed out’ look, as she wanted deeper colors and more details.
Brandy has recently, in the last few years, discovered that she gets great results with oil paints and has created some beautiful flowers, landscapes, and pet portraits. Oil paint is great for any subject.
Brandy currently resides in North Carolina and finds the subject matter there is abundant. Landscapes are a bit of a challenge in North Carolina because you truly can’t see past the trees, which is very different from New Mexico, where she was born and raised. In the southwest a person can see forever; North Carolina, not so much.
Brandy states that she was born into this world with nothing and shall depart from this world taking nothing with her, but between now and eternity, shall give God the glory for the special talent He has given her. “I paint because words are not enough! God has blessed me with the ability to touch hearts and souls with the gift of art.” says Brandy. “I see the world through the potential of beauty and my vision goes beyond what the natural eye can see. I believe that anything your heart desires can be painted or drawn... I merely await you to ask. Art says what one cannot.”
