I half reclined on an elbow as there was not much to see higher than that. So I thought I'd give the lower level a chance. Immediately what struck my eye was this poor dandelion. He is most obviously not sporting a normal dandelion doo. So I lay down on my stomach on the wet and dirty ground and communed with the poor flower. He didn't offer any input, really, no matter how I tried to get some information from him. So I took several pictures of him from various angles, all the while trying to think what might have happened to him. I still don't have a clue and it's driving me to distraction. Unless he's just having a really bad hair day. I suppose dandelions are allowed to have them too.

Daffodils on My Windowsill

My windowsill was badly in need of some cheering up. Silly me. All I needed to do was step out my door and I stopped in my tracks, looking at the frost on everything around me. Of course my tracks left negative impressions on everything I stepped on, so I quickly began paying attention to where I planted my feet. "Oh, look at the pretty frost on that leaf. Oooooo. That leaf is prettier...." And then...I saw it. The last yellow bud on my last yellow plant, the ridges and rough spots tipped with frost. It seemed suddenly so fragile, not robust like a new bud might be. And it was elegant. Elegant in its fragility. When the sun tipped over the top of the shrub and touched the bud, the bud glowed. But it was a gentle glow, not the glow of a summer, hearty bud. Summer was gone and fall was here. The bud sang its swan song this morning, a performance for one.

"Here's lookin' at you, kid."

I dont' know why. Susan's the eldest at 30. Oh. Wait. That's right. Time stopped for her at 29. She has nine siblings. Well, step-sibblings mostly. It's complicated.

And They Call Us Weeds

I don't know why. Maybe it has something to do with coming from a farming family. But it seems, in my mind, that August is a month to be associated with weeds. Yellow weeds. Sneezeweed, goldenrod, all sorts of weeds that cause us to sneeze. Well, many of us anyway. But when I am able to pull my Kleenex away from my nose for a moment and dry my weepy, swollen eyes, I see in front of me a Yellow Flower. I once had a veterinarian was allergic to dogs and cats. Somehow misery is less miserable when I'm doing something I love.

Spotted Touch-Me-Not

Let me introduce you to Spotted Touch-Me-Not, also known as Impatiens capensis. It grows in wet areas, by streams or ponds or lakes. It prefers shade. If it looks somewhat familiar to you , as a gardner, you might already know that is closely related to that red impatiens in that hanging basket or planter on your deck.

I. capensis has a surprising and pleasant use. The crushed stems are very soothing and help to heal poison ivy. It has additional medicinal uses but I am not an expert on these other uses nor am I qualified to recommend them.

I am , however, as a student of botany and especially of wildflowers, quailified to tell you how beautiful this flower is. And as a photographer, I'm qualified to show you.

Portrait of Black-eyed Susan

Beautiful, sunny, summer days. The leggy stem of the Queen Anne's lace is beautiful, but weak. When she came crashing down, Anne grabbed at the nearset thing to grab-- her neighbor, Black-eyed Susan. Susan, being stout by nature (she has a strong, stiff stem) was quite willing to hold Anne's head above water. Little did Susan know, however, that Anne was very clingy and Susan was not likely to be rid of her even though the rains had subsided.

It would appear that Susan has a new roommate. Poor Susan.

Black-eyed Susans with Inchworm

There was what seemed like a whole field of black-eyed susans at the entrance to Johnson's Park.
