This is one of the works of the Frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo Buonarroti, who died in Rome in 1564 at the age of 89 years, was commissioned by Pope Julius II della Rovere in 1508 to repaint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The masterwork was completed between 1508 and 1512.

This is a reproduction of Joaquin Sorolla’s “On the Sand, Valencia Beach” created in 1908. This image is a beautiful rendition of an innocent scene by one of Spain’s greatest artists and is currently housed in a private colleciton. Sorolla was born in Valencia in 1863. Orphaned at the age of two, he began studying painting in 1877 and went to Madried four years later to study in the Museo del Prado. In 1885 he moved to Rome and Paris. He returned to Spain in 1890 and within three years was the acknowledged leader of the Spanish modern movement. He maintained that position with prodigious creativity until he suffered a stroke in 1920. He died three years later.

This is a reproduction of Joaquin Sorolla’s “El Bote Blanco” created in 1905. Ajax and Cassandra by Solomon Joseph Solomon

A reproduction of Solomon Joseph Solomon’s masterpiece " Ajax and Cassandra " of 1886. This is rendition of the Greek tale, set in the destruction of Troy, of Ajax taking captive the Princess Cassandra, priestess of Apollo and daughter of Priam. Solomon Joseph Solomon was a British painter of the Pre-Raphaelte movement and was a student and followere of Alexandre Cabanel. He died in 1927 at the age of sixty-seven yerars. The original painting is in the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery in Victoria, Australia.

Procession of the Trojan Horse

A reproduction of Giovanni Tiepolo’s masterpiece "Procession of the Trojan Horse" of about 1760. This is the Italian master's rendition of the famous story found in the sacred books of the Greeks in which the people of Troy demolished their gates and brought into their city the vehicle of their destruction. The painting is at the Nationalal Gallery in London. Giovanni Domenico was born in Venice, the eldest surviving son of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, whose assistant he became. He worked in Venice, Würzburg and Vicenza. In 1762 he accompanied his father to Madrid, and on his death in 1770 returned to Venice. Although overshadowed by his father, Giovanni Domenico was a significant painter in his own right. His work is more down to earth and less allegorical than his father's.

The Storm by Pierre-August Cot

This is a reproduction of Pierre-Auguste Cot's masterpiece, "The Storm" of 1880. This was a commissioned work instigated by one of Cot's patrons. Upon its exhibition there was great speculation as to the subjects and the story. The original masterpiece is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Venice Twilight by Claude Monet

A reproduction of "Venice Twilight" by Claude Monet of 1908. This impressionistic masterpiece seeks to capture the magical feeling of the Queen of Adriatic. The original is at the Birdgestone Museum of Art in Tokyo.

Lake Tahoe by Bierstadt

This is a reproduction of Albert Bierstadt's masterpiece "Lake Tahoe" of 1860. This European immigrant was one of the first artists to have captured the magnificent panoramas of the American West. The original of this masterpiece is in the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Rapture

This masterpiece of Adolphe William Bouguereau was created in 1895. It depicts the ascension of Psyche at last in the arms of her lover Cupid. This is one of the most romantic of the master’s work and its subtle use of color is truly amazing. The light and dark purples of the cloth surrounding the couple play beautifully against the purple-gray clouds and mountains.

Acropolis of Athens

The German painter Leo von Klenze’s depiction of what the Akropolis of Athens looked like in the Age of Perikles. This was created in 1846 and resides in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The creator, Leo von Klenze died there in 1864 at the age of eight years.

Saxophone

This work is a modern, abstract painting depicting a saxophone. The colors and the interpretation of the instrument are stunning. This piece is a beautiful juxtaposition of bright and shining colors. Artemis

This is a re-constructionist image of Artemis, the virgin huntress among the Olympians, who was the twin sister of Apollo. She is here depicted listening the the report of a woodland bird, perhaps telling her of a defilement of the sanctuary of the wild creatures of the woods of whom she was the protectress.

Sappho

A reproduction of a work by Auguste Mengin, “Sappho”. This Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece of 1877 is a wonderful depiction of the greatest poetess of the Classical Age. Her sensual and exotic nature is beautifully rendered in this masterpiece.

Neuschwanstein

A reproduction by Troy Caperton of “Neuschwanstein”, 2006. This work is based on a view of the castle built by mad king Ludwig III von Wittlesbach of Bavaria. It strives to capture the wonder of this great, though fantastic architectural achievement of the nineteen century.

Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld

A reproduction of Jean Corot’s “Orpheus Leading Eurydice from the Underworld”, 1861. This nineteenth century Romantic artist probably most closely adhered to French Classicism in his work. He was a kind and generous man who died in 1875 at the age of seventy-nine years. In this work, Corot is depicting the Greek legend of Orpheus leading his beloved Erydice from Hades. This captured moment is just prior to the moment when Orpheus turns back to gaze on Eurydice. This broke his pledge to the Lord of the Underworld and his beloved faded from sight, never to be seen by moral eyes again.

Diver Two

Second in a series of eight works from the Tomb of the Diver. This tomb was created in about 480 Before the Common Era and was discovered in 1968. Troy Caperton has restored eight images taken fromthe tomb and presents them here for your consideration. Any lover of Classical Greece or of the lifestyle of the Ancients will find this series fascinating. The second panel is taken from the roof of the tomb and depicts a naked boy diving into a pool of water. The image gives the name for the entire tomb. The diver is depicted in flight, almost certainly a metaphor for the flight of the soul from one life to the next, a dive into the unknown, the purifying waters of the universe. This is perhaps related to the purification symbols of Pythagorean philosophy which preached the reincarnation of the soul.

Douleur d'amour, the Pain of Love

This is a wonderful work of the Neo-Classical Master Bougereau which he entitled, Douleur damour. The artist suffered the death of four of his five children and this wonderful work may reflect his grief as his son was suffering from what became a fatal case of tuberculosis.

Zeus et Thetis

This powerful images by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres by painted in 1811 in France. It depicts poignent moment from Book One of the Iliad when Thetis beseaches Zeus on behalf of her son Achilles.

Nuptials of Cupid and Psyche

This masterpiece was created in 1808, the Neoclassical work of Pelagio Palagi. The Italian artist died in 1860 in Turin, Italy when he was eighty-four years old. This oil on canvas is now displayed in the Institute of Art in Detroit, Michigan.

Psyche et L'Amour

This French Impressionist painting by William Adolphe Bouguereau is a beautiful and realistic image of Eros and Psyche in rapt attention during their ascent into the Heavens. The work was created in 1889. The artist died in 1905 at the age of eighty years.

Liberty Leading the People

A reproduction of a work by Eugene Delacroix, “Liberty Leading the People”. This Romantic masterpiece attempts to capture the concept that Liberty herself is the motivation for the uprising of the People against Opression. Delacroix places himself in the tradition of Michelangelo and Rubens. The artist died in 1863 at the age of sixty-five years.

Diana and Endymion

This is famous work by the French Jerome-Martin Langlois was completed before the artist’s death in 1838 at the age of 59 years. The original is in a private collection.

Entry of Alexander

This work by Charles LeBrun was created in about 1664 and is housed in the Louvre in Paris. It depicts the high watermark of the career of the great conqueror, when he marched into the capital of the great Persian Empire. Charles le Brun was born in 1619 and died in 1690 in Paris.

This beautiful lost work of the French Neo-classicist Jean Leon Gerome was created in 1866. Thought the original has been lost, we present here a truly wonderful reproduction. It depicts the scene was Cleopatra, the persecuted young queen of Egype, was presented by stealth to the master of the Roman world, Julius Caesar.

Police Verso

This is a reproduction of Jean-Leon Gerome’s “Pollice Verso” of 1872. The artist was born in 1824 and, by the time of his death at the age of eighty years, was a respected master in the French artistic community. The title translates as “turned thumb” and this painting is the source of the popular impression of the “thumbs up or down” ritual of the ancient Roman arena. The original is in the Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix, Arizona.

Death of Caesar

This beautiful lost work of the French Neo-classicist Jean Leon Gerome was created in 1867. It depicts the scene in the Roman Senate on March 15, 44 BCE when Julius Caesar was slain by a cabal of senators at the foot of a statue of Caesars great rival, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, Pompey the Great. This work is currently displayed in the Waters Art Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Shipwreck

This French masterpiece by Claude Joseph Vernet was created in 1722. From 1762 he was universally acclaimed as the greatest French artist of his age. He died in the year of the French revolution, 1789, and the age of seventy-five years. This work is currently in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C.

Compositon VI

This is a reproduction of Wassily Kandinsky’s “Composition VI” of 1913. Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866 and was raised in Odessa. He began painting at the age of 30 and is credited as the first artist to paint a modern abstract work of art. After 22 years in Munich, Kandinsky returned to Russia in 1918 but found his art was not in favor. He returned to Germany, but the rise of the Nazis in 1933 led him to remove to France. He died there in 1944. This 1913 composition is one of Kandinsky’s most famous and is a wonderful study in form and color. The original painting is in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.

Temple of Apollo

This is a reproduction of Karl Brulloff’s masterpiece watercolor, “Temple of Apollo at Phigalia”. This Russian painter was born of Italian parents and lived in Rome from 1821 to 1835. In 1833 his reputation was made and he created this watercolor on the way back to his native Russia. Due to failing health, he returned to Italy in 1849 and died three years later in Rome at the age of fifty-three years. The original watercolor is in the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow.

Venus Verticordia

A reproduction of a work by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, "Venus Verticordia". This Pre-Raphaelite masterpiece of about 1866 is haunting and seductive. The artist composed a poem for the work which is quoted below. It is now displayed in the Rossetti Cotes Art Gallery and Museum in Bournemouth, England.

The Coming Storm

This is a reproduction of George Inness’ “The Coming Storm” of 1878. Inness was a master of the American Hudson River School and was heavily influenced by Thomas Cole in his early work. His travels to Paris exposed him to the influence of the Barbizon School. Inness became a leader of American artists and, by the time of his death in 1894, his fame was great in America and Europe. This image is a perfect example of Inness’ fascination with the forces of nature. It is currently in the Museum of Art at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica, New York.

Reading from Homer

This masterpiece of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was created in 1885. It depicts a scene from ancient Rome when three listeners are intent in listening to a reading from the Blind Bard, the founder of their religion. This work is currently in a private collection.

A reproduction of a work by John Constable, “View of Salisbury Cathedral” of 1823. The artist was a native of Suffolk who died in 1837 at the age of sixty-one years. He is one of the greatest English landscape painters but did not become recognized until he was elected to the Royal Academy at the age of fifty-two. He struggled financially until then with his works selling better in France than in England. This is one of his major works and displays the great cathedral from the southwest. It was created for Constable’s friend and patron, Dr. John Fisher, bishop of Salisbury. This painting is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The American imagination had been captured by the loss of the Franklin expedition in 1847 and Church fully participated in that fascination. Above the Clouds at Sunrise by Frederic Edgar Chur

He has created a landscape without land and is probably one of the most audacious landscapes ever created. All elements are either in the horizontal or diagonal save two upthrusting trees. The use of a pink shade to the cloud bank is also stirring and somehow disturbing. Frederic Church was the leading artist of the second generation of the Hudson River School. By the time of this work, he was the most famous contemporary American artist at the age of thirty-four years. He had been a student of Benjamin Cole. Twilight in the Wilderness by Frederic Edgar Churc

This quentiessentially American work has had many interpreters and is a glorious celebration of the American wilderness. The eagle on the left can be seen as a representation of the American icon of the nation; crossed trees in the work may suggest Christianity. The scruffy and twisted pines may represent the imperfect yet strong elements of the landscape. But the entire work is dominated by blazing red clouds of the sky at dusk, surely a reflection of the bloody storm-clouds threatening Church’s homeland, the Civil War which was to break out in the year following this work’s creation. Metamorphosis of Narcissus

This masterpiece of Slavador Dali was completed in 1937 upon the artist’s return to Paris from the United States. It is based on the Greek myth of Narcissus. There are three Narcissistic abstract figures: the major beige-toned figure to the left, the decaying stone figure slightly to the right and a third figure in the background. The work is currently displayed in the Salvador Dali Museum in Figures, Spain.

The Intercession of the Sabine Women

A masterpiece by Jacques Louis David composed from 1796 to 1799 housed in the Musee du Louvre in Paris. This wonderful masterpiece is themed in reconciliation as the Sabine Women who had been forcibly taken as wives by the new male citizens of Rome urge their brothers and fathers not to attack their husbands. This print is edged.

Landscape with Solitary Tree

This is a reproduction of Caspar David Friedrich’s “Landscape with Solitary Tree” of 1822. This work represents the quintessence of the German Romantic movement in its concentration on landscapes. This particular artist attempts to lend a poetic nature to his images. His use of trees are symbolic of the strength of the German people in their eternal search for freedom. The artist died in 1840 at the age of sixty-six years and this work is currently housed in the Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Oxbow by Thomas Cole, 1836

This masterpiece by Thomas Cole was created when the founder of the Hudson River School was thirty-five years old. The work was originally entitled “View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a thunderstorm”. Cole’s work set the mode for the Romanticism and Naturalism which became the hallmark of the American Hudson River School. The artist died in 1848.

Hoybat pa Fjorden by Ludvig Skramstad, 1878

This masterpiece by Ludvig Skramstadt was created when the Norwegian artist was twenty-two years old. The Hoybat pa Fjorden is a wonderful depiction of what appears to be fishermen dwarfed by the mighty majesty of a Norwegian fjord. The artist migrated to Germany where he studied in Dusseldorf and then later moved to Drobak. In 1902 he moved to Munich where he died in 1912.

The Ninth Wave by Ivan Aivazovsky, 1850

This masterpiece of Ivan Aivazovsky is the most famous of his seascapes which constitute more than half of his works. This Armenian artist died in 1900 at the age of eighty-three years. This is probably his most Romantic piece. He burst upon the international scene in 1842 and was elected a member of five European Academies. He received the French Legion of Honor and left more than 6000 works by the time of his death.

A reproduction of "Winter Woods" of 2009, an image in the midst of woods enshrowded in a fresh fall of snow. Majestic trees stand tall near the shore of a small stand of water, not yet frozen over.

Sadak in Search of the Waters of Oblivion

This English Romantic masterpiece was the first exhibited work of John Martin. It was displayed when he was twenty-three years old. Martin went on the enjoy immense popularity and produced many works featuring Biblical scenes. Early producers of motion picture epics were heavily influenced by Martin’s work. He died in 1854 at the age of sixty-four years. The scene is inspired by the character of Sadak in James Ridley’s Tales of the Genii of 1764. Sadak seeks the Waters of Oblivion as part of an evil quest designed by his sultan.

Abbey in the Oakwood

This German Romantic masterpiece ws painted by Caspar David Friedrich. The painting is typical of Friedrich’s work in his feeling of lonliness which earned him the epithet, “the taciturn man from the North”. He began the work at the age of thirty-four years. The depressed and profoundly aspect of the artist’s personality manifests itself in this dramatic work. It is currently housed in the Nationalgalerie, Staalichte Museen zu Berlin.

Boys on the Boat by Sorolla

This is a reproduction of Joaquin Sorolla’s “Washing the Horse” created in 1909. This image is a beautiful rendition of an innocent scene by one of Spain’s greatest artists and is currently housed in the Museo Sorollo in Madrid. Sorolla was born in Valencia in 1863. Orphaned at the age of two, he began studying painting in 1877 and went to Madried four years later to study in the Museo del Prado. In 1885 he moved to Rome and Paris. He returned to Spain in 1890 and within three years was the acknowledged leader of the Spanish modern movement. He maintained that position with prodigious creativity until he suffered a stroke in 1920. He died three years later.

The Burning of Troy

Reproduction of Adam Elsheimer’s Renaissance masterpiece,“The Burning of Troy”, painted in about 1600. This German master of the Late Renaissance influenced Rembrandt and Rubens and was born in Frankfort-am-Main. In 1598 at the age of twenty, he went to Italy where he found some success, a wife and acceptance by the artist community in Rome. He died early at the age of 32. This master work of his is housed in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich.

Boys Bathing

This is a reproduction of Max Liebermann’s Impressionist masterpiece, Badende Jungen, or Boys Bathing of 1898. The artist was leading German impressionist and led the Berlin Secession from 1899 to 1911. He lived to see the advent of the Nazi for which he felt deep contempt. He died in 1935 at the age of eighty-seven years. This beautiful work is housed in the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.

Isle of the Dead, Arnold Bocklin, 1880

This is a reproduction of Arnold Bocklin's masterpiece, "Isle of the Dead" of 1880. It resides in the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland. Bocklin was a Swiss Symbolist artist who died in 1901 at the age of 74 years. He was leading light of his age and this image was typical of his treatment of mythological scenes. This image was inspired by the English cemetary in Florence.

A lesser known work by Edgar Degas, this masterpiece was created in about 1879 and currently resides in the Metroplitan Museum in New York City.

Slave Ship

A reproduction by William Turner’s of “Slavers Throwing Overboard the Dead and Dying” of 1840. Known popularly as “Slave Ship”, this stunning work caued a sensation in early Victorian England. The artist was then aged sixty-five and had been exhibited in the Royal Academy of Art since the age of fourteen. He never married and had several close friendships with men over his life. He died in 1851 having become quite eccentric in his later years.

School of Athens

The School of Athens is one of the most famous paintings of the Italian Renaissance. It was painted in 1509 and 1510 by Raphael who was born Raffaello Sanzio on April 6, 1483 in Urbino. This painting was part of his commission to decorate the rooms that are now known as the Stanze di Raffaello in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican. The Stanza della Segnatura was the first of the rooms to have frescoes completed and the School of Athens was the second painting completed.
