Allthough it paid well, it was very dangerous. We worked 1/2 hour sessions with 1/2 hours off to recover from the heat, taking salt tablets and lots of water. Occasionaly the steel would jam in the rolling mill, backing up the hot steel which flopped and twisted all around us like a huge live snake. Almost monthly a worker would be taken away to hospital for massive burns, often fatal. Thankfully I survived the job and made enough money to finish my engineering degree.

This series of photos were taken on the job with available light, so are motion blurred and grainy. They are my tribute to the blue collar worker who sweats to feed his family and make life easier for the rest of us.
