The Nine Mile Run Watershed Association works to restore the type of environment where most Americans now live – urban areas. The organization focuses on a 7 square mile watershed, which is home to the most successful aquatic ecosystem restoration in the United States. The stream and wetland restoration was completed in 2006 by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Pittsburgh. Now, the organization’s rain barrel and rain garden initiatives and tree plantings help to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff entering the stream. To help preserve this achievement, 9MRWA educates residents about how their actions directly impact water quality in the stream, monitors the restoration and advocates for watershed friendly public policies.

Because the adverse effects of excess stormwater runoff, causing widespread flooding and frequent sewer overflows, 9MRWA wanted to make the expertise we have gained in stormwater management available over a wider geographic area. At the same time, 9MRWA strives to become less dependent on government and foundation grants. Therefore this year, we are launching StormWorks, a social enterprise that offers custom assessments of property stormwater footprints. Through StormWorks 9MRWA is playing a critical part in the movement toward Green Infrastructure solutions to our urban stormwater challenges. Green infrastructure will bring a host of benefits, aside from just managing rain more effectively: it also offers clearer air, cooler summer temperatures, higher property values, and more visually appealing business districts and residential neighborhoods.
