This painting was inspired by an excerpt in the Torah from Exodus 13:21. The passage speaks about how G-d led the people of Israel in a pillar of smoke by day and a pillar of fire by night. The painting is called "Follow Me" and is specifically about the pillar of fire, because of how the light helped them find their way in the dark. The Hebrew words within the painting are: לָה בְּעַמּוּד אֵשׁ, לְהָאִיר לָהֶם--לָלֶכֶת v'laylah b'amod aish, l'ha'eer la'chem la'lechet This translates to: "by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel"

Etz Chaim

Etz Chayim is based on Proverbs 3:17-18 English translation of the lyrics: A tree of life to those who hold fast to it,and all who cling to it find happiness. Its ways are ways of pleasantness, and all its paths are peace. Help us and guide us, inspire us and provide us. With the wisdom Your Torah can show. Cause us to learn, renew and return, Just as in days of old.

Alef-Bet

I created this based on a Jewish idea that G-d created the Universe with words..."G-d spoke let there be light" and I remembered a story in the Midrash (famous Jewish scholarly text) about how the letters of the aleph-bet each asked to be the first letter when G-d created the Torah. Check out the fable by clicking on this link and scrolling down the webpage: http://sixthirteen.org/blog/2002/08/story_of_the_aleph_bet.php I was painting this idea of the Universe being made of Hebrew letters and flowing together in a Milky Way of light and stars. It occurred to me that random Hebrew letters wouldn't be as interesting. I don't speak Hebrew at all so I went to my Art Scroll prayer books up and found the appropriate words on the very first page opened. Shabatt Shalom

Shabbat Shalom means "Peaceful Sabbath". One of the most important Jewish holidays of the year comes every Friday night. Candles are lit and all work ceases as rest, prayer, reflection and rejoicing in all that G-d has given us.

L'chah Dodi

Come my Beloved to greet the bride The Sabbath presence, let us welcome! That is the translation of the Hebrew you see. The paintings is named for one of my favorite Hebrew songs in which the Sabbath presence is depicted as a beautiful bride. The Midrash teaches that G-d told the newly created Sabbath, 'Israel shall be your mate.' So when the Sabbath comes each week She advances toward Israel as if meeting her groom under the wedding canopy. In my painting, the Bride wears a veil of the heavens the Moon lighting her way. She is drawn toward a little house in which Shabbat candles are lit.

Hine Ma Tov

Hine Ma Tov is an Jewish hymn of Syrian origins inspired by Psalm 133, which reads, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"

Shalom Rav

The translation of the hebrew words in this painting are: Shalom rav al Yisrael am'cha tasim l'olam Establish abundant peace upon Your people Yisrael forever When I had my daughter it was one of the most spiritual experiences of my life. I would look around at people and marvel. "Everyone is someone's baby." What if we all looked at each other that way? Would there be peace? I also created this because there is a special peace that cannot be described when you look at your newborn. Here is the rest of the prayer that this painting was inspired from.
