Waterfront Fountain No. 1

A focal point of family activity in the beautifully appointed Waterfront Park in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, this fountain is usually filled with kids splashing about in swimsuits, while their parents retreat from the sun under nearby shade trees. I arrived early one chilly February morning in order to capture this photo, sans children. The arching streams of water frame the park's pier as well as Patriot's Point on the opposite shore of Charleston Harbor. Shadow Swirls at the Old Exchange

Historic downtown Charleston in South Carolina has one of the highest concentrations of finely crafted iron fences and gates in the world. Some of my favorite wrought ironwork in Charleston is the balusters and railing at the Old Exchange Building (c. 1771). The location on East Bay Street at the end of the east-west corridor of Broad Street sets up this ironwork for some remarkable shadows such as these. Cast against the texture of masonry flooring at the entrance to the Old Exchange, these shadows make for one of my personal favorite compositions featuring ironwork. Market Hall, Charleston, SC

Historic downtown Charleston in South Carolina has one of the highest concentrations of finely crafted iron fences and gates in the world. While most of the ironwork is of the wrought iron variety, there is also some amazing cast iron installed around the city. It was a great pleasure to live in Charleston while the old Market Hall (c. 1841) was being renovated, including the beautiful ornate cast iron balusters and railing on its façade. It was so cool to see the old cast iron come back to life up the double winding staircase entrance to the building, and it was even cooler to capture a fun composition. Shadows & Stairs at the Old Exchange

Historic downtown Charleston in South Carolina has one of the highest concentrations of finely crafted iron fences and gates in the world. Some of my favorite wrought ironwork in Charleston is the balusters and railing at the Old Exchange Building (c. 1771). The location on East Bay Street at the end of the east-west corridor of Broad Street sets up this ironwork for some remarkable shadows such as these. Cast against the shape and texture of stairs in this photo, the shape of the shadows varies as the suns position changes with the seasons. On this particular day, the shadows aligned perfectly with the stair treads to make for one of the most interesting compositions of its type in my portfolio. The tree is sixty-five feet high and has a circumference of 25.5 feet. Its area of shade is 17,000 square feet, and the largest limb has a circumference of 11 feet.

The congregation of St. Mary's was the first Roman Catholic Church in the Carolinas and Georgia. The present building was completed in 1839 in the Classical Revival Style.
