Packham Pear and Plum, Quartered

I saw this couple in the fruit bowl and had to paint them. The cool lime green of the pear against the juicy purple plum was irresistible.

Winter Bulbs

I love the different textures of onions - their crisp papery skins contrasting with the slick, translucent flesh. The beautiful colors picked out by the cool winter light made this bunch such a pleasure to draw.

Among the Onions

I love the way an onion skin is crisp and papery until the light shines through it and makes it glow like stained glass. The unusual viewpoint made this picture more abstract in nature and very interesting to draw.

Tossed Salad

The sunlight blazes through the blind, casting a striped shadow across the kitchen debris. The paper grocery bag has ripped open and vegetables spill onto the kitchen floor; the carrots, beets and radishes mingling with today's mail and an old pair of cherry red boots.

Cascade

Clean dishes stacked in the dishwasher sparkled in the shafting sunlight and caught my imagination. The crazy angles and metallic surfaces made this a challenge to draw.

Drip Dry

A variety of plastic kitchenware, both translucent and opaque drip dry on the dish drainer. The bold primary blue and yellow colors were an unusual choice for me, but they made such a striking composition that I couldn't resist reaching for my pencils.

Muddy Boot Study

A color pencil study of my favorite old cherry red boots, kicked aside after garden duty, caked in mud and with the toe leather wearing thin.

Tops and Tails

The green leaves and rosy red radish roots scatter through the purple shadow from the kitchen blind. The wooden handle of the prep knife points towards you, its blade glinting in the sun as you put the final touches to the salad.

Beet Boots

A pair of muddy purple boots has been kicked aside on the stone kitchen floor and the sun from the garden still warms the fresh vegetable harvest, mud spilling from the glowing red beets.

Afternoon Delight

Juicy strawberries and a jug of whipped cream - afternoon tea perfection. Served on fine white china and glass with sparkling silverware. Is there a more perfect way to spend a summer afternoon? Another spot of tea?
