This classic work of 1781 brought Canova to the attention of Europe’s masters of art critique. It began his reputation as “a unique and truly divine man”.

The statue is half-life-size and was inspired by an episode in the Metamorphoses in which Apollo crowns himself with a laurel wreath after Daphne has changed into a tree. He stands in contrapposto, a balanced state characterized by the opposition of straight and bent limbs, in a moment of reflection after the dramatic chase.

Perseus with Medusa

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/3efad05f-7ee0-4d49-a616-e8b850a135a6/uploadedartwork/100X100/4c806293-7d2d-4ca0-82ac-36281d26b7d6.jpg' alt='4c806293-7d2d-4ca0-82ac-36281d26b7d6' border="0" /><BR/>A print of an image of Canova’s Perseus with the Head of Medusa which was created from 1804 to 1806.
