Arcadia by Thomas Eakins

A reproduction of Thomas Eakins’s masterpiece, “Arcadia” of about 1883. This is a stylized rustic reverie based on the romanticized notion of Arcadia, the most rural part of Ancient Greece. Like several other works by Eakins, this piece was controversial in those Victorian times. The original is in the Metropolitan Museum o f Art.

“Pensive Boy”. There is a particular charm in the angst of a young man. It can take many forms, one of them is a dazed acceptance of the new forms that life is taking. This is an effort to capture that momentary mode of being.

In the Shadows

“In the Shadows”, 2006. A beautiful young man discovered in the shadows during a walk in the woods. What’s he doing here? Is he hiding?

Plain Young Man

“Plain Young Man”, 2005. The work is a tribute to those among us who have a beauty that is different from societal standards. This young man has an inner beauty that shines through his otherwise average facial features.

Stunning

This is an image of a stunning beautiful young man captured at the peak of physical form. The interplay of dark shadows and bright highlights is intensional.

Ignudo Number Six of 1511

This is one of the works of the Frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo Buonarroti, who died in Rome in 1564 at the age of 89 years, was commissioned by Pope Julius II della Rovere in 1508 to repaint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel which had been frescoed earlier by Piero Matteo d’Amelia with a star-spangled sky. The masterwork was completed between 1508 and 1512.

Apollo Crowning Himself

An artistic print of Antonio Canova’s statue, “Theseus and the Minotaur”. This classic work of 1781 brought Canova to the attention of Europe’s masters of art critique. It began his reputation as “a unique and truly divine man”. The statue is half-life-size and was inspired by an episode in the Metamorphoses in which Apollo crowns himself with a laurel wreath after Daphne has changed into a tree. He stands in contrapposto, a balanced state characterized by the opposition of straight and bent limbs, in a moment of reflection after the dramatic chase.

Perseus with Medusa

A print of an image of Canova’s Perseus with the Head of Medusa which was created from 1804 to 1806. In this work Perseus stands coolly triumphant, holding up the severed head of the snake-haired gorgon Medusa, the sight of which will turn anyone into stone for gazing on it. The pose vividly recalls the Apollo Belvedere, the work most admired in Canova’s day.

The Genius of Fame

This print is a reproduction of Annibale Carracci's masterpiece, The Genius of Fame. Troy Caperton made this reproduction in 2004. The original is in Rome and was created by Annibale Carracci who lived from 1560 to 1609.

Nude Study of Thomas E McKeller

A reproduction of John Singer Sargent’s “Nude Study of Thomas E. McKellar”, of 1896. The work is on display at the Museum of Fine Art, Boston. This work was quite a scandal in late Victorian England and America. Not only were frontal depictions of male nudes rare by famous artists, but those of Black Men were virtually unknown up to this time.

Nude Boy

A reproduction of a work by Henry Scott Tuke, “Nude Boy”. This work was completed in about 1881. The artist was a native of Cornwall who died in 1929 at the age of seventy-one years. His twin abiding loves were the sea and boys. This caused quite a stir in Victorian and Edwardian England, but he was nonetheless a member of the Royal Academy.

“Young Hermes”. This wonderful image attempts to capture the grace and beauty that the Ancients so wonderfully depicted in their images of their idealized gods.

Biker Boy

"Biker Boy". A study in hostile nudity. The subject is taken from imagination and the use of a darker palette is meant to help convey a feeling of disdain.

Defeated

“Defeated” of 2006. This is an effort to recreate the feeling of utter and complete defeat. So many times in life this point must be reached before a man can rise up anew to begin again to conquer the difficulties of living.

Modern Prometheus

“Modern Prometheus”. Prometheus was a titan who gave the gift of fire against the orders of Father Zeus. As punishment, he was chained to high and desolate mountains where an eagle devoured his liver once a day. Being immortal, Prometheus’ liver would grow back, only to be devoured again the next day. Aeons later, Herakles freed the titan.

By the Sea

A reproduction of an adaptation of the work, “By the Sea”. The subject gazes out to sea; waiting for a lover, yearning to return to the sea or what lies across it?

Study in Shadow

This print is a reproduction of Troy Caperton's "A Study in Shadow", in which the arm and chest of one of my friends is subjected to a study in which low light and combined with exaggerated coloring to produce a unique piece.

Bellophoron Fighting the Chimaera

Reproduction of the statuary work, Bellophoron Fighting the Chimaera by Johann Nepomuk Schaller. This print of a magnificent sculpture attempts to capture in two dimensions this masterpiece of Austian Neoclassical sculpture. This was created in 1821 by Johann Nepomuk Schaller who died in Vienna in 1842 at the age of sixty-five years. It is currently housed in the Osterreichische Galerie at the Belvedere in Vienna.

Study of a Nude Man

A reproduction of "Study of Nude Man" of about 1816 by Theodore Gericault. This French master executed this work while in Rome and Florence when he was about twenty-six years old. This was during a period in which Gericault was refining his efforts to depict the human body. He returned to France where he inspired many young painters, among them Delacroix. He died in Paris in 1824.

Athlete in Vatican

My own photo of a Classic statue of an athlete. This statue portrays an athlete or soldier in the midst of a mighty blow. The porportions of the male body are wonderfully protrayed here. The original is in the Vatican Museums in Rome.

Silenus with infant Dionysus

My own photograph from my recent trip to Rome. Silenus with Infant Dionysus is in the Vatican Museums. This is a tender rendering of the Greek mythological protector and follower of the God of Wine.

Hercules and Dog

My own photo of a lovely statue of Hercules with a dog. This statue portrays the hero in a more classic physique without the bulging muscles typical of most representations. The original is in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
