The artist's acrylics and mixed-media paintings, many of them very large, are uniquely characteristic of intense colors and multiple layers of varied textural materials that interact with light to "challenge the boundaries of their two-dimensional surfaces". They are inspired by short-lived garden blooms and cyclical seasons both of which the artist compares with the continually evolving, ephemeral, fleeting happiness' "formless form": a phrase she has coined to describe her concept. Hints of circles signify the human life-cycle which allude to trying times followed by happy phases, as a continuous cycle of life and rebirth influenced by her roots from India.

Painted on varieties textural materials layered on diverse surfaces be they canvas, plexiglas, linen, paper or anodized aluminum, viewers experience the illusion of the images extending beyond the confines of their otherwise two-dimensional surfaces under any light situation. Her work explores color, form and line that emerge as “formless forms” as she calls her abstracted images that mysteriously peek out of colorful details, while hints at circles that are also an integral part of her work signify the human life cycle. As a whole, her compositions and assemblages present an ongoing dialogue that offers endless possibilities to the viewer imagination. A solo retrospective exhibition of a large selection from her body of work was invited for the Indianapolis Artsgarden, near Monument Circle, Indianapolis in January 2006.

Her completed invitational commissions to date range from:

* A permanent wall painting for children measuring 13.8 feet wide and 4 feet high for the front lobby of Crooked Creek Elementary School in Marion County, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA completed in April 2008

Living in coastal areas next to the beach inspired her love of nature. She says she used photography to capture a moment in nature and then replicates the idea in her studio with shimmering earthy colors and alluring textures to portray as joy as a visual entity. Her painting procedure often entails making mental notes of a scene in nature, including the lighting, colors, and textures. She then uses these impressions in her studio to replicate the subject matter in an abstracted form, using rich physical textures, intense colors, and varied media".

Following the renovation of the Hotel Bellagio in Las Vegas, Nevada, two mixed media textural paintings each measuring 4 feet by six feet in dimension commissioned of the artist by the MGM Mirage Design Group, which were based on two of Chitra’s earlier works recreated on a larger scale, are on permanent display in the Café Bellagio since October 2004.

What impresses collectors who own Chitra Ramanathan’s originals is the abstract play of color and flickering brush strokes dominated by a central burst of energy, and the vibrant circles in almost all her work which represent the cyclical and fleeting nature of happiness. She defines happiness as the ultimate human goal with a “formless physical form”. Most of her paintings' titles are indeed indicative of her theme of universal happiness: consider Effulgence, Euphoric, Exuberance, Field of Ecstasy, Exultation, Lyrical Profusion and Revelry. Chitra specially likes to work with textures, including sand, fiber, rice paper, gold and silver leaf and various acrylic textures. By painting on both sides of her transparent plexiglas paintings, she creates multi-dimensional effects with images at the back appearing to emerge from within, which results in a "floating quality”.

Chitra Ramanathan's “The Exaltation”, Acrylics on

The artist Chitra Ramanathan is most known for her signature shimmering, colorful and alluring textural mixed media series of paintings that portray happiness as a fleeting, ephemeral and cyclical visual entity.

The Artist-Painter Chitra Ramanathan of MGM Mirage's Cafe Bellagio Interior Commission Fame Contributes Conceptual Textural Mini Paintings to the Indianapolis Museum of Art's Gallery of the Machine Exhibit/Sale

Released on = February 10, 2005, 5:48 pm

The artist and painter Chitra Ramanathan, who completed a Major Commission by the MGM Mirage Group for permanent display in the interior of their Cafe Bellagio in Las Vegas late last year, has recently created and contributed a series of ten original colorful, textured conceptual paintings in her signature style to the Gallery of the Machine. Each of her paintings measures six and a half inch by five inch in dimension. The Gallery of the Machine, located in the Indianapolis Artsgarden from February through May 2005, is later proposed to be moved to the Indianpolis Museum of Art as permanent exhibit.
In April, the Gallery of the Machine is to be unveiled in the Artsgarden at the Indianapolis Arts Council’s annual meeting. Funded with a $5,000 Fast Track grant from the city’s Cultural Development Commission, it is a vending
machine that has been loaded with pieces of original artwork by local artists. Proceeds from the sale of the artworks will benefit the Passion for Arts Fund, which is the Indianapolis Museum of Art's annual operating fund. This particular model of the vending machine sells art instead of candy or gum when money is fed into it, and will be up for display and sale of artwork through August 30, 2005.

Chitra Ramanathan has held several solo and group exhibitions of her paintings on Broadway, New York since 1995, following a large solo exhibition of her paintings at the ARC Gallery/Educational Foundation in Chicago, Illinois in 1994.

Chitra Ramanathan's Egression

Mixed media textural painting on Linen. My paintings are based on the theme of happiness as an ultimate goal for all, although it has no physically identifying characteristics. To express what I consider the cyclical, fleeting and elusive nature of happiness, my paintings are characterized by an abstract play of color and flickering brush strokes dominated by a central burst of energy, and the vibrant hint of circles in almost all my work represent the cyclical and fleeting nature of happiness. I define happiness as the ultimate human goal with a “formless physical form”. I specially like to work with textures, including sand, fiber, rice paper, gold and silver leaf and various acrylic textures. By painting on both sides of my transparent Plexiglas paintings, multi-dimensional effects emerge with images at the back appearing to emerge from within, which results in a "floating quality”.

Euphoric

Mixed media painting with acrylics and collage on canvas. "Chitra's paintings exemplify her love of nature as well as the subjectivity of each individual's unique pursuit of happiness.

In 1995, Manahattan Arts, New York called Chitra Ramanathan's varied pieces on canvas, linen, and on and behind plexiglas "spiritual works that resonate with a quiet harmony"

"Exhilaration"

Mixed media painting with acrylics, rice paper, oil and other textures on canvas. Artist Chitra Ramanathan Receives Las Vegas' Hotel Bellagio Painting Commission

Chitra Ramanathan
Alumni, Painting Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) 1993, M.B.A 1997

Following the recent renovation of the Hotel Bellagio, two large paintings by artist Chitra Ramanathan are permanently displayed in the Bellagio. Her paintings exemplify her love of nature as well as the subjectivity of each individual's unique pursuit of happiness. Her painting procedure often entails making mental notes of a scene in nature, including the lighting, colors, and textures. She then uses these impressions in her studio to replicate the subject matter in an abstracted form, using rich physical textures, intense colors, and varied media.

A woman artist from India, Chitra Ramanathan is most known for detailed paintings which stem from her childhood in India where she began painting classes from the age of four, and won prizes in art competitions throughout her growing years. Living in coastal areas next to the beach inspired her love of nature. She says she used photography to capture a moment in nature and then replicates the idea in her studio with shimmering earthy colors and alluring textures to portray as joy as a visual entity.
