Fly: Catcher of Dreams

There exist ancient beliefs that ‘good’ and ‘bad’ dreams hover in the night air as we sleep. Native American ‘dream catchers’ were created to ‘filter’ these dreams, allowing the good to gently pass through, and the bad to become tangled and ultimately dissolved with the light of each new day. I wish that we could capture the nightmares that threaten a child’s sleep and allow only beautiful thoughts to visit them in their slumber. A young woman shares the breath of life and love with a sleeping child. My daughter posed for this piece. It was inspired by my children and my son's struggle to breathe due to his asthma. I spent many sleepless nights,holding him, with my hand upon his chest,wishing that he could peacefully and effortlessly breathe. Fly: Sweet Slumber

oil and mixed media on canvas 48” w x 36” h There is nothing more beautiful, and more vulnerable, than a sleeping child. All children deserve to rest, blanketed by comfort and warmth. I pray that they may slumber sweetly, but know that some do not. My own children posed for this composition. The limited, blue-grey palette, reinforces the sense of quiet and calm. My work is a visual story, but the meaning is dependent upon the perception of the ‘reader.’ Imagery such as the fish, eggs and water, are traditionally symbolic of ‘life.’ The rest is open to interpretation. 15 % of the cost of this piece will be donated to the Art For Cancer group, and specifically sent to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
