Ponte Vecchio Inspirations I

The Ponte Vecchio ("Old Bridge") is a Medieval bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it, as was once common. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers. It has been described as Europe's oldest wholly-stone, closed-spandrel segmental arch bridge, but there are far older segmental arch bridges such as Alconétar Bridge. The Ponte Vecchio's two neighbouring bridges are the Ponte Santa Trinità and the Ponte alle Grazie. The bridge spans the Arno at its narrowest point where it is believed that a bridge was first built in Roman times, when the via Cassia crossed the river at this point. The Roman piers were of stone, the superstructure of wood. The bridge first appears in a document of 996. After being destroyed by a flood in 1117 it was reconstructed in stone but swept away again in 1333 save two of its central piers, as noted by Giovanni Villani in his Nuova Cronica. It was rebuilt in 1345, Giorgio Vasari recorded the tradition in his day, that attributed its design to Taddeo Gaddi, besides Giotto one of the few artistic names of the trecento still recalled two hundred years later. Modern historians present Neri di Fioravanti as a possible candidate.

The Palazzo Pubblico - City Hall of Siena, Italy

The Palazzo Pubblico (town hall) is a palace in the city of Siena, located in the Tuscany region of Italy. Construction began in 1297 and its original purpose was to house the republican government, consisting of the Podesta and Council of Nine. Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia.The outside of the structure is an example of Italian medieval architecture with Gothic influences. The lower story is stone; the upper crenelatted stories are made of brick. The facade of the palace is curved slightly inwards (concave) to reflect the outwards curve (convex) of the Piazza del Campo, Siena's central square of which the Palace is the focal point. The campanile or bell tower, Torre del Mangia, was built between 1325 and 1344 with its crown designed by the painter, Lippo Memmi. The tower was designed to be taller than the tower in neighboring rival Florence; at the time it was the tallest structure in Italy. It was fitted with a mechanical clock during the mid 14th century. Its design was used as the basis for the Dock Tower in Grimsby, England constructed in 1852. Odense City Hall (Denmark) was greatly inspired from Palazzo Pubblico.

Portofino Inspirations VI

Portofino is a famous little town at the Italian West Coast - South of Genoa. Originally it was inhabited by fishermen. Today it is a fashionable town. Too fashionable in my taste. Tourists, Gucci stores, billion class yachts, fancy restaurants. As I looked closer at the old colorful houses I was terror-stricken. All the architectural details around windows etc. was not real - they were PAINTED. But now I have taught myself to look at the houses as a piece of scenery - just a flat. And it is a beautiful piece of scenery - a beautiful flat. I look forward to work with more genuine towns in Cinque Terre like Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and RioMaggiore. I was there and a friend of mine has immortalized the magnificent scenery - I'll do an art work on each of these towns - concluding my series of old fishermen towns and their fantastic architecture.

M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT - Pantheon II

Pantheon is the middle of Rome's historical center, about a 5 minute walk east of Piazza Navona. Finished by Hadrian but not claimed as one of his works, it used the text of the original inscription "M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT", standing for Latin: Marcus Agrippa, Lucii filius, consul tertium fecit translated to "'Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, Consul for the third time, built this" on the new facade. This was a common practice in Hadrian's rebuilding projects all over Rome. How the building was actually used is not known. Pantheon is situated on Piazza della Rotondo. This Piazza is my favorite spot in Rome. I love to sit there in the morning. At noon. In the evening. In the evening I love espacialley to sit there in the dusk. It becomes darker and darker and lights are lit. People are strolling. Pizza della Rotondo has a Mc Donald's, it has exclusive restaurants, a fountain - "Fontana del Piazza Rotondo", a sculpture - it has everything. Up there between the penthouse apartments there are are gardens. Yes, gardens. The apartment that I dreamt of - it is fantastic - has a web cam. No black clouds can hit my soul. Long before that I look at the web cam and inhale the atmosphere of Piazza Della Rotondo.

Pantheon Rome Inspirations III

The Pantheon, from Greek: meaning "Every god", is a building in Rome, originally built by Marcus Agrippa as a temple to all the gods of Ancient Rome, and rebuilt in the early 2nd century AD. The generic term pantheon may be applied to any building in which illustrious dead are honoured or buried. The building is circular with a portico of three ranks of huge granite Corinthian columns (eight in the first rank and two groups of four behind) under a pediment opening into the rotunda, under a coffered, concrete dome, with a central opening (oculus) open to the sky. Almost two thousand years after it was built, the Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome. The height to the oculus and the diameter of the interior circle are the same, 43.3 metres (142 ft). A rectangular structure links the portico with the rotunda. It is one of the best preserved of all Roman buildings. It has been in continuous use throughout its history. Since the 7th century, the Pantheon has been used as a Roman Catholic church dedicated to "St. Mary and the Martyrs" but informally known as "Santa Maria Rotonda".

Pantheon Rome Inspirations I

The Golden Temple, Kyoto, Japan

Kinkaku-ji, literally Temple of the Golden Pavilion, or formally Rokuon-ji, Deer Garden Temple is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. The original Kinkaku-ji was built in 1397 to serve as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, as part of his estate then known as Kitayama. It was his son who converted the building into a Zen temple of the Rinzai school. The temple was burned down twice during the Onin War. On July 2, 1950, at 2:30 am, the pavilion was burned down by a monk, who then attempted suicide on a hill behind the building. He survived, and was subsequently taken into custody. During the investigation after the monk's arrest, his mother was called in to talk with the police; on her way home, she committed suicide by jumping from her train into a river valley. The monk was sentenced to seven years in prison, but was released because of mental illness on September 29th, 1955; he died of other illnesses shortly after in 1956. During the fire, the original statue of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu was lost to the flames (now restored). The present structure dates from 1955. In 1984, the coating of Japanese lacquer was found a little decayed, and a new coating as well as gilding with gold-leaf, much thicker than the original coatings (5/10,000mm instead of 1/10,000mm), was completed in 1987.

Catherine's Palace Inspiration - St. Petersburg, R

Located some 12 miles (about 25 kilometers) away from St.Petersburg, the ensemble of the Catherine's Palace and Park are among Russia's top historical recreation complexes visited by hundreds of thousands tourists every year. In the seventeenth century there was a Finnish farm here at Dudorovsky eminence called "Saari mois" in Finnish language. In 1708 it became a possession of the Russian Tsar, and the Finnish toponymy word "Saari mois" was transformed into "Tsarskaya Mysa" that sounded more Russian. In 1708-1724 Tsarskaya Mysa was the residence of Peter the Great's wife, the Empress Catherine I. From 1741 Tsarskoye Selo became the residence of the Empress Elizabeth and during her reign the architect Rastrelli created a magnificent Emperial Palace, a brilliant masterpiece of Russian baroque. At the same time the Hermitage and Grotto Pavilions were built, regular Upper and Lower Gardens were laid out, and the Lower Garden was decorated with sculptures. Later the ensemble was supplemented by the Cold Bath-house, the Agate Pavilion, the Hanging Gardens with a sloping platform, and the Cameron Gallery.

The Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was, from 1732 to 1917, the official residence of the Russian Tsars. Situated between the Palace Embankment and the Palace Square, adjacent to the site of Peter the Great's original Winter Palace, the present and fourth Winter Palace was built and altered almost continuously between the late 1730s and 1837, when it was severely damaged by fire and immediately rebuilt. The storming of the palace in 1917 became an iconic symbol of the Russian Revolution.

Caminito is a little street in La Boca, a neighbourhood, or barrio of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. It retains a strong European flavour, with many of its early settlers being from the Italian city of Genoa. During the 1800s, a small stream flowing into the Riachuelo River ran along the same route where the Caminito is now found. Later that century, this area of the stream became known as the Puntin, the Genoese diminutive term for bridge (a small bridge allowed people to cross the stream here). When the stream dried up, tracks for the Ferrocarril Buenos Aires y Puerto de la Ensenada were installed at the site, and disused tracks remains at the end of Caminito, along Garibaldi Street. In 1954 the rail line was closed and the area where Caminito now is became a landfill and the neighbourhood's worst eyesore. Over the following three years, Argentine artist Benito Quinquela Martín, an abandoned orphan who was adopted by a Genoese immigrant couple in La Boca, painstakingly prepared the walls facing the abandoned street, applying pastel colors and, by 1960, having a stage put up at the southern end; the wooden-plank stage was replaced with a nearby theatre house in 1972. The artist was a personal friend of Argentine tango composer Juan de Dios Filiberto, who created a well-known 1926 tune by the same name.
