We can see the father and his two sons who, having made a supply of mud bricks, are loading up their donkey...well, we can see the father doing the work, and the kids playing around and imitating a soldier's salute!

Life in the Shadow of the Hindu Kush

It's a tough life surviving the elements in rural Afghanistan, a rough mud dwelling your only shelter from the scorching heat in summer, and the sub-zero temperatures in winter. This picture is taken in an area called Shakardara, north of Kabul. The mountains behind form part of the Hindu Kush mountain range.

These children live in an area called Shakardara, in the foothills of the Hindu Kush, north of Kabul. Born in a time of war, many of these children had never known life in peacetime and many have seen horrors most of us wouldn't dare imagine...To gain their trust took time and was often difficult as Afgan children grow up mistrusting strangers due to the high rate of kidnapping still prevalent in the country.

The Tragic Aftermath of War, Afghanistan

An old man, who lost lost both his legs during Afghanistan's decades of war, sits crying in front of a group of women in Kapisa, north of Kabul in the foothills of the Hindu Kush. A couple of minutes after this photograph was taken, the police came and wheeled the old man away, as it was not felt to be appropriate for a man to be seen crying in front of women.

A Victim of War, Kapisa, Afghanistan

This elderly man lost both his limbs during the decades of war in Afghanistan. Now as an amputee, he has no other recourse than to beg for a living. Behind him, you can see the broken window of car, in which a local police commander's bodyguard had just been shot dead.

Imagine a road sign like this welcoming visitors to your neighborhood! An eerie reminder of how careful Afghans still need to be about landmines and other live ammunition, still lying around after the many years of war suffered by the country.

Tanks Graveyard, just outside Kabul, Afghanistan

Tanks and armored fighting vehicles: remnants of the war with the Taleban and Operation Enduring Freedom. These vehicles were brought in by both the Afghan mujahideen fighters and by the Taleban, and deposited under the disarmament program and will now be re-vamped for use by the new Afghan National Army.

While some of the old grey Soviet-era apartment buildings still survive and development continues in the city, with modern office blocks and residences spring up from the ashes, the vast majority of Kabul's residents still live in mud houses.

Jingly Jangly Truck en route to Pakistan

These trucks, known locally as the "jingly jangly" trucks, due to their ornate decorations, are travelling the dangerous road from Kabul to Jalalabad and onwards to Pakistand via the renowned Khyber Pass. This road is the lifeline between Pakistan and Afghanistan, along which many commodities (legal and otherwise!) have for centuries been transported. Behing the truck in this photograph, you can see tunnels hewn through the mountain side. Today's travellers risk attack from bandits and terrorists, as well as from rock-falls and precipitous cliff edges. This route has been the scene of many ambushes against invaders since the time of Alexander the Great.
