Purple Starfish

Hummingbird

Hummingbird feeding on mexican sage growing in our front yard. We love how these little guys come to visit while we have our coffee on the front porch. It took me quite a few tries to get a decent shot with the right combination of stop action/blur, a good pose, background and general composition. We're not sure if this is a ruby throated hummingbird or what. Fell free to offer your identification.

Murder of Crows

A group of crows is called a "murder". This group is harassing a hawk, who probably went after a crows nest. Crows stick together, very social.

Willow Goldfinch

The state bird of Washington is the Willow Goldfinch, shown here munching on dandelion seeds. He's a pretty little yellow bird, matches the flowers behind him.

Barn Owl

I can't help but see something in the eyes of this barn owl. I was so taken by his heart-shaped face, beautiful white and tan plumage and shy demeanor offsetting his deep dark eyes.

Great Egret ready

This great egret was feeding by walking on floating seaweed as if it were an island. This required him to fly a little from time to time and I was on a bluff above him at Point Lobos near Big Sur. Getting a proper exposure took a few tries because he was dazzling white and in bright sun against dark water and seaweed. This shot shows the unusual long neck and a hint of the wingspread of this huge impressive bird.

Little Bird

I snapped this image of a little bird on a frosty morning in Fairhaven. He didn't stick around for long. Feel free to tell me what his species is. He's cute, but I should probably be able to identify him too.

Moth on screen

A deceptively simple image juxtaposing the organic patterns of a moth against the sharp relief of a grid dissolving into blur. All backed by a "bokeh" of complimentary colors.

Red Dragonfly

Taken from about five feet away with a 300mm lens. This pretty dragonfly kept perching just off the balcony, ducking the swallows in the area, he didn't seem very concerned with me. I was struck by his red-orange color and the intricate structure of his wings.

Red Tailed Hawk

This is your basic head and shoulders portrait of a Red Tailed Hawk posing against a white background. I had to use my considerable animal hynosis skills to get him to hold still, and even so I also threatened to call his agent when he tried to eat one of my fingers.

Starling on blue

This little starling joined us for breakfast one morning at the harbor (or was it afternoon?). I know they are considered pests, are a non-native species and all that but I found this guy and his brothers and sisters quite beautiful. This group of starlings also tended to be pretty attentive to us a humans-- what would we put up with? Would we feed them if they hung around and acted cute? What would earn a tiny crumb from our plates?

Peacock in the grass

This peacock kept walking towards me, towards our jeep, as I perched myself on the door jamb and balanced against the open door. It was a country road with no traffic and I was losing the light. Before he decided to move on, this guy gave me a couple of nice poses, this one is my favorite. I like the psuedo vignetting in the center of the frame and the way that the earth tones set off the brilliant plumage. I'm actually glad I did not get the typical fan-tail of many peacock photos I have seen.

Snowy Owl Juvenile

We were so taken with the personality of this juvenile snowy owl. Every tme I see his cute face he reminds me of a puppy and i want to say "woof!"

This Northern Goshawk had his back turned to us but seemed to want to keep at least one of his bright orange eyes trained on us anyway.

Wood Duck

I always get a kick out of wood ducks. They are a lot more shy than the mallards which frequent our local wildlife preserve, nor do they stick around for as long. I'm pretty sure they just migrate through, but when they do they are wonderful to watch.

Seagull

I really appreciate seagulls. They're prolific and successful, clever and observant. So much to see in the ordinary, the non-rare, the commonplace that we so often overlook or even complain about.

Great Egret

Just out of the jeep at Moss Landing I got some of the best shots of the day as this Great Egret flew directly towards us and overhead. We hiked a long time in the hot sun and didn't bring water. I dropped a lens and thought I had broken it (I hadn't). And I don't think I got a another good shot the whole day. Whenever one of these very large birds flies over it's a really awesome sight.

On a windy day in Bellingham, Washington i watched this Great Blue Heron get chased out of a wildlife preserve by a family who threw a rock just to see him fly. I was astounded, but the heron didn't fly too far away. He ended up on a mud flat and i hiked out on the overpass to watch him and try to get some good photos without scaring him. I got this shot as he stepped under a bridge and a beam of sunlight broke through the clouds illuminating him against the dark water and disintegrating wooden posts. A gust of wind caught his plumage and made a graceful arc.

Cormorant

Cormorants are the tough guys of the aquatic bird world. They don't take any guff from anybody, and they don't seem to be afraid of anything. They also seem to spend as much time underwater as they do in the air. I love these diving birds, and learned to love them more as I observed them in Bellingham. One of their endearing traits is that they have to spend quite a lot of time on a perch with wings spread, drying out. My impression is that they become so waterlogged from all the diving that they do that they can scarcely fly after awhile. It's not uncommon to see them facing the sun in this wings-spread position for many long minutes at a time.

Wild Goose

Not a pretty bird, but intelligent and discriminating. Geese make good watch dogs, they're scrappy and fearless. I'm not sure how endearing geese can be, but they've got their own brand of beauty. This guy seemed to calm down when I sat down with my camera. He was curious about me and it shows. I expect a goose would make a good companion, once you get to know him.

Crow at crossroads

This is one of many magic moments with crows. I love crows. After striking several poses, this crow gave me a look, I thanked him for his time and he flew off. I didn't know it at the time but the new town I was trying to make my home was nicknamed "the fourth corner" and I was definitely at a crossroads in my life. I don't think crows agonize over strained metaphors, but I do know that they're clever.
