Layers Of Time

Mixed Media on 48 x 24 inch gallery linen. Inspired by a small beach near Broome (in the Kimberley area of Western Australia) that we visited on a hovercraft trip. There had been a cyclone that shifted some of the coastline a few years ago and now there were layers from 5 different time periods exposed.

The bottom layer (volcanic rocks from the cretaceous period, the leafy age of the dinosaurs) was only exposed at low tide. Above that is a layer of wildly coloured striped sandstone rocks - all sorts of crazy shapes and angles. Then above that the deeply grooved, rounded dune systems of the pindan (a deep red dusty type of soil) with a clearly marked wiggly line through it which the aborigines refer to as the dreamtime (their age of the rainbow serpent)

The original painting has been sold.

Originally a 9" by 5" acrylic based mixed media on masonite created/donated for a fundraiser.

Beaches, Boats & Blue

This fun-filled award-winning artwork was originally created specifically for the Mindarie Art Awards in 2004 which had as its theme "Beaches, Boats & Blue - the Essence of Mindarie". I was inspired by the name of the exhibition - I thought, what a great phrase ("Beaches, Boats & Blue") - I"m sure I could work to that - so entered a painting with that name and then had to produce it!

I kind of "thought the theme", then started off with some gesso and all different colour blues and a bit of raw sienna and used my imagination to take it from there (ie I let the painting do the talking)

The original painting is Mixed Media - acrylic paints and inks, glue, gesso, Caran d"Ache Crayons - on a half sheet of Rives BFK paper - it was sold soon after it was framed

Figure It Out

I originally created 3 separate acrylic paintings using the same colours with a different colour being dominant in each. I then tore them up and re-assembled them in this collage ...

Intrigue

This award-winning painting (which started from just colour and texture) reminds me of the ruins of an ancient culture, a sort of look of decay with a veiled face being that of an onlooker remembering and/or wondering .....

The original painting is acrylic on a half sheet of BFK paper and was sold on the night it won an award, only a couple of days after it was framed.

The Deep

"The Deep" by Western Australian artist Chris Marshall is a colourful, expressive acrylic painting on an 18 x 18 inch canvas. You can purchase a smaller print on a range of papers or on canvas.. The original painting went on to become part of a mixed media diptych.

Inspired by 6 days on a boat in Shark Bay, a world-heritage listed marine park off the West Australian coast. The seagrass is home to all sorts of marine creatures ...

The original acrylic painting, on a full sheet of Saunders watercolour paper, was sold before being hung the first time it was exhibited.

At Waters Edge

Cheerfulness

I started this painting when I was on roster at our Heathcote Studio - the initial layer was inks, blue and yellow acrylics in painting mediums and PVA glue. Multiple layers followed. A visitor to the studio said that it made her feel cheerful and I agreed - 'Cheerfulness' became the title.

The Dance

I see this image as a dancer spinning and spinning and being totally absorbed in the dance - totally oblivious to her surroundings. I will never sell the original as it is a piece that proved a turning point in the development of my art.

Hayloft

This little painting represents the golden colours of a hay loft - I had fun creating the image with primary colours mainly yellows

Splash!

This award-winning acrylic painting was created for an exhibition called "Splash!" - so .... I started with a splash and dropped paint in mediums of different viscosities from a great height, layer after layer ...

Blue is my favourite colour and I just love the restful nature of the harmonious colours in this painting - semi-abstract with unusual composition, let it transport you to the park....

Kimberley Coast

Mixed Media on 48 x 24 inch gallery linen. Inspired by the dramatic shapes and spectacular colours of the coastline near Broome (in the Kimberley area of Western Australia) TIme, weather and the huge tides are continually eroding and reshaping the layers of different rocks. The bottom layer (volcanic rocks from the cretaceous period) are often only exposed at low tide.

Organic

The original acrylic-based mixed media painting started (as many of my paintings do) from colour and texture. But the bit I love most of all is the beautiful blue glazing on this abstract Afro type artwork which helps to bring out its organic feel - there are layers and layers and layers of it! Yum.....

Spring Into Action

Created for an exhibition called Spring Into Action, this piece suggests pansies springing around in a stiff breeze. My mother claimed the original when she saw it in the exhibition and it now has pride of place in her loungeroom.

a visitor to our Heathcote Studio where I was working on the painting also thought so and bought it "off the easel"

Autumnal

Secret Business

This image, like many of my others, started from just colour and texture then gradually the indigenous faces emerged. This somewhat naive painting seemed to me to become a celebration of the passing on of customs through the generations. The children watch and absorb while the ancestors look on. I hope it has a bit of the mystery surrounding secret men's business. (The buyer of the original painting certainly thought so!)
