Cicada Magiciada. I've always wanted to paint a cicada. I had in mind to do one of the big green ones that we find where I live, but I couldn't resist doing one of these Magicicadas . She's dressed up for the evening in black with orange trim on her wings.

Basset Ring

“Basset Ring” shares the same landscape as my painting “Dog Pile”, a place where there is clearly a lot going on in the dog world. As with “Dog Pile” I am exploring the other lives that dogs have, beyond their lives that seem to center around human existence. Read more in the “Dog Pile” description.

Dog Pile

It's hard to know what some of my paintings mean as I'm painting them—mostly, I understand this well after they are complete. Certainly this painting was influenced by the story “The Musicians of Bremen”, and by the playfulness of the dogs that I photographed at the dog park. But, I also realized later that I had painted this piece while our husky was dying, and I think that the light that all of the dogs are looking toward has some meaning. The remote place has meaning as well—We know dogs as beings whose lives center around human lives, but I wonder about their other lives—what they think about as they sit on the porch or what they dream about when we see them wiggle their legs and yip while they sleep. Perhaps there is a place where they live for dogs. It wasn’t until after I finished this piece that I realized that the story of the Musicians of Bremen is about old animals that were soon to be killed by their masters. The animals in the story have a wonderfully comical way of triumphing over their fates. The hill in the background was just an unplanned accident in this painting, but you see it again in the painting “Basset Ring”, the second in this series, so there seems to be a lot going on in this place.
