Why Robots?
I make art that reflects our life in the 21st century. So I developed a way of painting that uses a smart device, a small autonomous walking robot, as a tool for making the painting.

Why Cactus?
Science took a very long time to understand the prickly pear cactus genus. Most of these cacti live longer than people, so it is difficult for a single individual to really see what goes on.

The cactus images resonant for me because they involve a long and very successful struggle to survive in harsh conditions. Also, their history involves a struggle on our part to understand them.

Puppy

One of my earliest robotic works. Unlike all other plants, there is no oxygen/CO2 gas exchange during cacti photosynthesis. There is an internal chemical change. Later, at night or cooler temperatures, the stoma open and gas exchange takes place.
The painting is the subject of an article "Chance in Robotic Painting" in the December 2007 issue of YLEM Journal of Art and Science.

Opuntia Basilarius

Opuntia Basilarius is the scientific name of the Beaver Tail Prickly Pear Cactus. This painting is a linear calligraphic interpretation of the special characteristics of this plant. The Beaver tail has larger and much rounder pads that other prickly pear cacti. They also have some magenta coloration.

Rising

This painting shows the prickly pear's ability to form stalks in crowded and low light situations. Typically this occurs after the plant is 70 years old.

This painting was published as part of an article in New Scientist magazine Dec 2006

This is a leading example of what I call Visual Jazz where the robot can see the previously painted image and reacts to it.

Silent Dancing

There is a species Opuntia Elongata that does have elongated arm like pads, although it usually has more than I used here.
