Stealing the Attention

A painting of a plain mare and her young foal. These two aren't the most beautiful pair, which made them appealing. In the foal I wanted to capture the real actions of a youngster of this age, so I chose to paint him shoving himself in front of his mother- they really do that- they steal all of the attention. Mom just patiently lets him too. That is why I called the painting 'Stealing the Attention'. For some reason, I thought brown horses could be a very dull painting so I used the water color background and created a very vibrant mottled green, orange and blue background. It contrasts sharply with the horses, immediately pulling your eyes to what may have been a boring painting... One of my favorites to paint. I made sure a lotof detail went into the horses.

Blue Spotz

I called this painting 'Blue Spots' for obvious reasons. I love painting horses in unusual colors and powerful back ground colors like reds, golds and oranges. Horses are powerful creatures and a powerful background makes a painting of an animal some how more attractive to the masses and to the soul. I originally intended this painting to have a 'patriotic feel' but some how - it managed to be quite the opposite. This is one of my favorite paintings to date. The Original was quite small, being only the size of a trading card, 2.5x3.5 inches. The original was sold to a very lucky collector in France!

Arabian Dancing

This painting remains a favorite. I was experimenting with wet on wet technique and this paitning was the result of many 'happy accidents.' I can't even tell you how many times I blotted, wetted and dried the paper adding more spots, dapples and shading to this horse. The same with the background. I would apply the color intensly then blot, and leave only traces. It created a soft mood in the painting that was something magical.
