They are two of the four principal Hawaiian gods. Ku means "rising upright," Hina means "leaning down." The sun at its rising is referred to Ku, at its setting to Hina; hence the morning belongs to Ku, the afternoon to Hina. Prayer is addressed to Ku toward the east, to Hina toward the west. Together the two include the whole earth and the heavens from east to west; in a symbol also they include the generations of mankind, both those who are to come and those already born. Gefjon is attested in the Poetic Edda, compiled in the 13th century from earlier traditional sources; the Prose Edda and Heimskringla, written in the 13th century by Snorri Sturluson; in the works of skalds; and appears as a gloss for various Greco-Roman goddesses in some Old Norse translations of Latin works.

The Prose Edda and Heimskringla both report that Gefjon plowed away what is now lake Mälaren, Sweden, and with this land formed the island of Zealand, Denmark. In addition, the Prose Edda describes that not only is Gefjon a virgin herself, but that all who die a virgin become her attendants. Heimskringla records that Gefjon married the legendary Danish king Skjöldr and that the two dwelled in Lejre, Denmark.”

This statue stands atop the Gefion Fountain in Copenhagen, subject of a future post.

Trick Or Treat

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/9b1730f3-0c4c-49e0-9f69-e22c3f555f7c/uploadedartwork/100X100/32bcbe7c-b5ad-476f-986f-4c581fe69d51.jpg' alt='32bcbe7c-b5ad-476f-986f-4c581fe69d51' border="0" /><BR/>Just a little Halloween fun. This crucifix was made of white oak and pine in Palencia, Spain during the latter half of the 12th century. The catalog of the Metropolitan Museum of Art describes it as follows:

"Wearing the golden crown of the King of Heaven, Christ is shown in triumph over death. This image of the living Christ on the cross is often found in Romanesque Spain. With much of its original color intact, the figure is enhanced by extensive gilding of the hems and the use of simulated jewels as well as large polished stones. As the convent from which this poignant image comes was not founded until the fourteenth century, the crucifix was probably made for the nearby Romanesque church that still stands at Astudillo."

Lantern

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/9b1730f3-0c4c-49e0-9f69-e22c3f555f7c/uploadedartwork/100X100/8eb75a9c-2517-4c54-879e-5031794d29fc.jpg' alt='8eb75a9c-2517-4c54-879e-5031794d29fc' border="0" /><BR/>Just a simple lantern found on the grounds of the New York Botanical Garden. The inspiration for his full-size seated nude was drawn from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem "The Song of Hiawatha" (1855), a popular wellspring of themes for American artists during the late nineteenth century. Saint-Gaudens represented the central protagonist, a Chippewa chief, as a contemplative figure seated on a rock, leaning against a tree trunk with his quiver of arrows and bow nearby, and "Pondering, musing in the forest / On the welfare of his people," as the excerpt from Longfellow's poem inscribed on the marble base declares.

Baggage

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/9b1730f3-0c4c-49e0-9f69-e22c3f555f7c/uploadedartwork/100X100/de117f4e-705f-4985-84d9-f7e11ffc839d.jpg' alt='de117f4e-705f-4985-84d9-f7e11ffc839d' border="0" /><BR/>Between January 1, 1892 and November 12, 1954, 12 million immigrants passed through the processing facility at Ellis Island in New York. The Met's collection data base says this about the piece -

The Burghers of Calais, commemorating an episode during the Hundred Years' War between England and France, is probably the best and certainly the most successful of Rodin's public monuments. Rodin closely followed the account of the French chronicler Jean Froissart (1333 or 1337–after 1400) stating that six of the principal citizens of Calais were ordered to come out of their besieged city with head and feet bare, ropes around their necks, and the keys of the town and the caste in their hands. They were brought before the English king Edward III (1312–1377), who ordered their beheading. Rodin has portrayed them at the moment of departure from their city led by Eustache de Saint-Pierre, the bearded man in the middle of the group. At his side, Jean d'Aire carries a giant-sized key. Their oversized feet are bare, many have ropes around their necks, and all are in various states of despair, expecting imminent death and unaware that their lives will ultimately be saved by the intercession of the English queen Philippa. The arrangement of the group, with its unorthodox massing and subtle internal rhythms, was not easily settled, and the completed monument, cast in bronze by the Le Blanc-Barbedienne foundry, was not unveiled in Calais until 1895. The Metropolitan Museum's bronze is a lost-wax casting made from the plaster model in the Musée Rodin in Paris.

Their database says the following of this piece - "This Perseus, purchased by Countess Valeria Tarnowska of Poland, is a replica of Canova's famed marble of Perseus in the Vatican, conceived about 1790 and first shown in 1801. Based freely on the Apollo Belvedere, which had been carried off to Paris under Napoleon, it was bought by Pope Pius VII and placed upon the pedestal where the Apollo had formerly stood. In the Museum's version, Canova has refined the ornamental details and aimed for a more lyrical effect than in the Vatican Perseus, a stylistic streamlining characteristic of his artistic process. Medusa's head is based on that of the antique Rondanini Medusa."

East Meets Near East In West

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/9b1730f3-0c4c-49e0-9f69-e22c3f555f7c/uploadedartwork/100X100/7b04f7cc-04d2-4261-8b4f-46ec5506226e.jpg' alt='7b04f7cc-04d2-4261-8b4f-46ec5506226e' border="0" /><BR/>No great art here. Their collection database says the following -

Parts of this chapel-like gallery were constructed with twelfth-century limestone blocks from the church of Notre-Dame-du-Bourg at Langon, located about nineteen miles east of Bordeaux. According to one seventeenth-century document, the small parish church - which had a single apse nave, slightly projecting transepts, and a semi-circular apse - was founded in 1126 as a dependency of the nearby abbey of Notre-Dame-de-la-Grande-Sauve. Seven capitals from the crossing and choir of Langon are installed in this gallery, all of them decorated with human heads or figures carved almost in the round. The crowned female bust on one of the capitals has often been identified as Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122? - 1204), one of the most remarkable women of the Middle Ages. However, other than a trip she took to the region with her husband, King Henry II of England (r. 1154 - 89), in the 1150s - when they might have spent one night at the nearby Notre-Dame-de-la-Grande-Sauve - there is no documentary evidence that Eleanor ever visited Langon or that the bust was intended to portray her. The blind arches lining the walls (below, left) and the predominantly geometric patterns decorating the abaci, arches, and cornices (below, right) are all characteristic of the late-twelfth century architecture in western France.

Like many religious monuments in France, Notre-Dame-du-Bourg suffered repeated damage, especially from the Hundred Years' War and the French Revolution. By the early nineteenth century the choir had been divided into two levels: the lower served as a stable, while the upper became a dance hall, then a theater. When the Museum purchased the chapel fragments in 1934, the upper level was being used to store tobacco (above). The reconstructed chapel is about three-quarters of its original size.

The Burghers of Calais (Detail II)

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/9b1730f3-0c4c-49e0-9f69-e22c3f555f7c/uploadedartwork/100X100/2df9f34f-f927-48a2-a261-2a47f910a9af.jpg' alt='2df9f34f-f927-48a2-a261-2a47f910a9af' border="0" /><BR/>This bronze cast of Auguste Rodin's "The Burghers of Calais" is in the collection of New York's Metropolitan Museum Of Art. It is late 15th Century, made of oak, and attributed to the Workshop of Master Tilman in Cologne, Germany.

The museum's database says the following - "This shrine was originally painted and had two wings decorated in low relief with scenes of the Birth of the Virgin and the Adoration of the Magi (both now in the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Enschede, Netherlands). The central image, seen, here, represents the Death, or Dormition, of the Virgin, which is set in a domestic interior. Saint Peter stands at the back holding a book as he officiates at the sacrament of extreme unction. He is accompanied by ten other apostles. Through a doorway at far right we glimpse a depiction of a legend, recorded in the thirteenth century, in which Saint Thomas does not reach the Virgin before her death and is only convinced of her Assumption after her belt is dropped into his hands by an angel. Many of the other iconographic and stylistic elements of the shrine are derived from Netherlandish painting. This affinity is not surprising given that Master Tilman, the carver whose workshop made this piece, was active in the late fifteenth century in Cologne, a city that enjoyed close ties with the Lowlands."

Located in Fort Tryon Park at the northern tip of Manhattan, the Cloisters are a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and are a treasure trove of medieval art.

Maryland Crab Meat Co

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/9b1730f3-0c4c-49e0-9f69-e22c3f555f7c/uploadedartwork/100X100/0d9713c9-994b-4b7d-8785-14ce0bbc9bab.jpg' alt='0d9713c9-994b-4b7d-8785-14ce0bbc9bab' border="0" /><BR/>Original photo taken in St. Michaels, Maryland. The process for her canonization began in 1884. She was declared Venerable by Pope Pius XII on January 3, 1943. She was later beatified on June 22, 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and as such she is properly referred to as Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha within the Roman Catholic Church. The final step in the canonization process is awaiting a verified miracle. The Battle of Antietam was fought on September 17, 1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland and was the bloodiest single day battle in American history with over 23,000 killed, wounded or missing. Although the battle was tactically inconclusive, it had unique significance as enough of a victory to give President Abraham Lincoln the confidence to announce his Emancipation Proclamation, which discouraged the British and French governments from potential plans for recognition of the Confederacy. Today there is a peacefulness and quiet over this land that once saw so much blood spilled.

No Trespassing

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/9b1730f3-0c4c-49e0-9f69-e22c3f555f7c/uploadedartwork/100X100/b76bfd73-b0ee-4fea-86e4-b2b11019ec04.jpg' alt='b76bfd73-b0ee-4fea-86e4-b2b11019ec04' border="0" /><BR/>New York's Verrazano-Narrows Bridge with a U.S. Army "No Trespassing sign.

Landing Gear

<img src='http://thumbs.imagekind.com/member/9b1730f3-0c4c-49e0-9f69-e22c3f555f7c/uploadedartwork/100X100/e757d7d5-0a5d-4ff8-8ccb-03fa0efa099f.jpg' alt='e757d7d5-0a5d-4ff8-8ccb-03fa0efa099f' border="0" /><BR/>Landing gear of the space shuttle "Enterprise."
