INGSOC 1984 Thoughtcrime

n the World of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, Airstrip One is brutally lorded over by the one-party government of Big Brother and INGSOC. All forms of dissent, even down to peoples' facial expressions or questioning thoughts were a crime. In the novel, crimestop is a term used that means to rid oneself of unwanted thoughts, i.e., thoughts that interfere with the ideology of the INGSOC Party. This way, a person avoids committing thoughtcrime. In the novel, we hear about crimestop through the eyes of protagonist Winston Smith: "The mind should develop a blind spot whenever a dangerous thought presented itself. The process should be automatic, instinctive. Crimestop, they called it in Newspeak. He set to work to exercise himself in crimestop. He presented himself with propositions -- 'the Party says the earth is flat', 'the party says that ice is heavier than water' -- and trained himself in not seeing or not understanding the arguments that contradicted them."

Tank Man (AKA The Unknown Rebel) was of course the anonymous hero who was seen during the protests at Beijing's Tienanmen Square on June 5, 1989 stopping Chinese T59 tanks as they rolled down Chang'an Avenue. No one knows what happened to Tank Man. Many think he was dragged off by Chinese secret police and executed along with so many others. This common man's actions, however, emboldened millions to stand athwart tyranny. The original images that came from this heroic act entranced the World. Charlie Cole's photo of Tank man was awarded as one of the 100 photos that changed the World.

Libertas Freedom Goddess

Dan McCall's original design of Libertas, the Roman goddess and personification of liberty, which the Statue of Liberty was based from as well as numerous state seals and statues on the top of capitols. Here Libertas holds the Constitution in her right hand with a shield (the defense of the Constitution), and her traditional spear in the other which is always vigilantly ready to strike at tyranny. The hat she has on may look familiar. It's called a pileus, and was worn by Roman slaves after they became free. At her feet is a rattle snake, which is always ready to strike at those who look to harm Libertas. The rattle snake was a popular addition to Libertas when the Republic was very new, but has for a long time been left out of images of Libertas.

Sad Obama Despair

What a difference a few years makes. In 2009 the President rode into office with an ocean of support from voters hoping for change after 8 years of war and hanging on by their fingernails as the global economy was at the brink of oblivion. Fast-forward to today. President Obama has further extended American throughout the World, attacking Yemen, Pakistan, Somalia, Libya, along with an expanded and failing Afghan war and an Iraq that has permanent military installations larger than the Vatican. The Patriot Act was renewed without so much as a whimper. Secret rendition bases remain all over the globe. Over 700 military bases are now in over 150 countries, and the World is as unstable as ever. The Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke, was allowed to secretly bail out foreign and domestic financial firms with over $15 Trillion Dollars of American money - more than the United States Public Debt accrued in it's over 200 year existence. Major corporations have been nationalized, the highly unpopular corporativist Obamacare was pushed through, and "official" unemployment hovers around 9%, while young Americans are being crushed with unemployment rates never comprehended since the Great Depression. You don't have to be a partisan to recognize the great irony that the iconic candidate of hope that Shepard Fairey captured in his famous poster has become the President of Despair in this parody. This poster design was created by Dan McCall. Other versions are/will be forthcoming. .

Maybe the best propaganda poster ever made (if that is actually possible), "Keep Calm and Carry On" was a poster design produced by the British government in 1939 during the beginning of World War II, but never used. Instead of fear, hatred, and destructive calls for violence, this poster merely called for calmness and everyday perseverance.

Torn, distorted, and distressed through the natural decay of time, the paper matches the harshness of Hoover's portrait. From Alexander the Great nearly dying from an archer’s arrow in the Konar Valley in 327, to the 1st Afghan War in 1842, where only a single soldier returned of the 16,500 British and Indian troops sent to take Kabul, to the Soviet Empire in the 1980s, and now the United States—Afghanistan is the Graveyard of Empires. Even Genghis Khan was forced to put up 1,500 miles of still visible Mughal torch-light signal towers Calcutta to Bukhara to deal with the impossibility of conquering the area. For thousands of years imperial hubris has been humbled by the brutal mountains of Afghanistan. Gen. Victor Yermakov, a former Soviet commander in Afghanistan, summmed up this by quoting Babur, founder of the Mughal dynasty that ruled much of central Asia in the 1500s: "Afghanistan has not been and never will be conquered, and will never surrender to anyone." Of course it will all be different with the United State’s occupation, right?
