Blue Ridge Parkway Autumn Sunset - Rapture The North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway in all it's glory. I shot this amazing autumn sunset from the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of Western NC. The fall foliage has been great in some areas of the southern Appalachians this year, not so great in others. I've been after this shot for a couple weeks now making numerous trips to this location in hopes that I would get some great conditions. I was so pleased when it finally happened! Roan Mountain Rhododendron Bloom - A Glorious Gree

Spring rhododendron blooms along the Appalachian Trail near Jane Bald in the Roan Mountain Highlands area. The Southern Appalachians offer up such gorgeous landscapes when the catawba rhododendron flowers and flame azaleas are blooming, and hiking the Appalachian Trail at this time of year is a spiritual experience for outdoor lovers. This classic view from Jane Bald looking toward Roan Mountain is one of my favorites, and I was thrilled to get such great light on the mountains when we visited. Click the image to view it large! One of my favorite places in the Spring season, Magnolia Plantation is a stunning sight that is rich with vibrant color during the azalea bloom. The Calm - Folly Beach at Sunset - Charleston, SC

We were lucky enough to witness this amazing sunset at Folly Beach on our most recent trip to the coastal areas near Charleston, SC. This amazing beach scene had all of the elements a landscape photographer could hope for with a great subject, incredible lighting, leading lines in the sky and water to draw you deeper into the scene, and it's all topped off by a richly colored sunset sky. I especially like the way a beam of golden evening light perfectly highlights the fine detail of the tree trunks. I shot this image on the eve of Hurricane Irene as she approached Charleston, and you can see the leading edge of the storm on the horizon. I returned to this location the next morning as the storm hit and it was anything but the peaceful and serene environment pictured here. Hope you enjoy it, comments welcome! ;-)

Highlands Sunrise - Whitesides Mountain Landscape

Highlands, NC is one of my favorite places to visit and landscapes like this are one of the reasons why. "Rhodes Big View" area offers a great view of Whitesides Mountain and the valley below at any given time, but it is especially striking at sunrise. The dynamic sky over the fog filled valleys in the golden light of early morning really made this scene special in my opinion.

Dry Falls is one of the reasons we are so fond of Highlands and it is easy to see why. This is an epic waterfall in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, and during the fall foliage it is really something special to see.

Grandfather Mountain Heavy Fog - Bridge to Nowhere Heavy fog at the mile high swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain State Park along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of western NC. There is something peaceful yet sinister about heavy fog and the insecurity of not knowing what lies ahead. I really like the fact that I can "almost believe" that I can see what's on the other side of the bridge, but then it just isn't clear. Faves and Comments are appreciated! Hope you enjoy it! ;-)

Outer Banks Jockeys Ridge State Park - Swept Away

Outer Banks Jockeys Ridge State Park - Swept Away The Outer Banks has so many landscapes to photograph, and Jockeys Ridge State Park has plenty of potential. Located in Nags Head on the Outer Banks, Jockeys Ridge is the tallest natural sand dune in the eastern US. There was a nasty storm front moving through with 60mph winds when I shot this photograph, which revealed these awesome patterns in the deeper layers of sand that are normally covered by a thick layer of soft sand and not visible. Looks like Mother Nature's topographical map! I wish I'd have done a better job shooting this, but it was nearly impossible to think and function while being hammered with flying sand that filled my eyes the second I opened them. The exposure only shows the heaviest flying sand near the ground, but it was bad even at 6 foot (I shot this from about 1.5ft off the ground). While the picture doesn't give a true sense of the amount of flying sand, these were easily the worst conditions I have ever shot under. The $175 polarizer I had on the front of my lens was pitted and completely destroyed from being sandblasted. The wind was blowing so hard that at one point it almost blew me over the edge of the steep dune directly behind me when I stood up. Three days and as many showers later, I was still picking sand out of my eyes, ears, and scalp. Great fun! Faves and Comments are appreciated! Hope you like it! ;-)

Made the trip to Grandfather Mountain State Park last week with some good friends and saw this gorgeous landscape during the Golden Hour light from the rocky pinnacle. Grandfather Mountain is a jewel in the southern Appalachian Mountains of WNC, offering spectacular scenic landscape views from over 6000ft. above sea level. Botany Bay is an incredibly beautiful plantation located just south of Charleston on the Atlantic Coast of Edisto Island, SC. The road in is just amazing as it passes through these old twisted plantation oaks that are covered in a blanket of spanish moss and entangled vines.

Chattooga River Potholes Waterfall Highlands NC - The Artist's Hand The Chattooga River near it's headwaters in the Highlands NC and Cashiers NC area of Western NC. This spot is sometimes called the Chattooga Potholes because of it's many sculpted potholes that the river has carved out of the solid granite in this area. Forest Essence - Autumn Landscape Vertical Panning

I've been wanting to try this again for quite some time, so here is a new autumn forest landscape using the vertical panning technique. The tall trees and the forest floor covered in fresh autumn color combined with the heavy fog that lends a great sense of depth seemed to be a scene made for panning. I have always liked these types of abstract shots, a landscape photograph that is still open to some interpretation similar to a painting. I feel this technique can really minimize all of the details in a scene like this, leaving behind only the raw elements to focus on. I like how a scene that is so abundant in detail can be diminished to it's base elements of light, ground, and trees. The Essence of the Forest perhaps...

Great Smoky Mountains Gatlinburg TN Roaring Fork – Gift of Life Another scenic landscape photo from the Roaring Fork in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park outside of Gatlinburg TN. I named this image “The Gift of Life” for a few reasons. Aside from the obvious meaning of the water supplying life to the lush forest around it, and the way such places have a way of nourishing the soul, this wonderful portion of river is right behind a historic homestead and surely offered the owners the means to live in this somewhat harsh environment. Upstate SC Waterfall Photography Blue Ridge Mountains Landscape A wonderful small waterfall at Table Rock State Park in the foothills of Upstate SC. Upstate South Carolina has many waterfalls to visit both small and large that I don't think you could ever visit them all! I shot this Blue Ridge waterfall landscape last spring while out visiting some local SC waterfalls with friends. It was raining pretty good and was difficult to keep me and my camera dry, not to mention capturing an image with sharp foliage. Asheville NC Blue Ridge Mountains Sunset - Welcome

Asheville NC Blue Ridge Mountains Sunset and Fog Landscape Photography near the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina Sunset over a sea of fog and peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Asheville NC. I could tell you about the 3 hour drive it took to get to the trailhead, or the 8.5 mile hike it took to get to this location. I could also tell you about the 3 days we camped out waiting for gorgeous conditions like this to unfold in front of us. But I won't waste your time with any of that, because I shot this image from the parking lot at the local Lowes Store. Isn't living in Asheville NC great? I named this image "Welcome to Asheville" because it actually looks over the end of the runway at the Asheville Airport, and is therefore the first view visitors to Asheville are treated to. Also, the cut out in the trees on the side of the big mountain is the Blue Ridge Parkway as it heads south out of Asheville on its way to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Shot during our trip to the Outer Banks of NC last spring, I really liked the bright gold bursts against the rich blue hour tones. Great Smoky Mountains National Park River Paradise

The classic features of a Great Smoky Mountains National Park river landscape were all present at this location along the Roaring Fork Motor Trail just outside of Gatlinburg TN. I was thrilled to see the lush green foliage along this section of the river. The vibrant greens on the moss covered rocks in this location seemed to be to good to be real, and I immediately felt like I had stepped into some sort of fairy tale land when I first saw it. Tanawha Trail Foot Bridge - Rough Ridge Autumn Fol

Foot bridge on the Tanawha Trail heading up Rough Ridge near Grandfather Mountain in the fog during the fall foliage. I spent a couple days in the Grandfather Mountain area this year during the fall foliage but didn’t quite the conditions I was hoping for. This shot was not what I had planned to shoot there but rather was the result of trying to make the best with the conditions I had. Rough Ridge is one of my favorite spots along the Blue Ridge Parkway, offering a great hike up the side of Grandfather Mountain with stunning views of the Linn Cove Viaduct and surrounding area. This area during autumn is truly Western North Carolina at its best in my opinion.

Great Smoky Mountains Landscape Photography - Spring at Mortons Overlook Spring in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Vibrant spring greens under an approaching storm at Mortons Overlook between Cherokee NC and Gatlinburg TN. I thought this was a neat scene with a nasty storm closing in on us quickly, yet there was this brilliant hole at the end where you could still see the gorgeous clear spring day that was coming to an end. This was very difficult lighting to expose properly, but I think the end result here accurately reflects the conditions we saw. Click the image to view it large! Rough Ridge Grandfather Mountain Blue Ridge Parkway - Remains of the Day The last of the day's light from Rough Ridge on the side of Grandfather Mountain along the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I shot this landscape while scouting out fall color in the Grandfather Mountain area last week. While there was some fall foliage, it was the light in this scene that caught my eye more. Roaring Fork Great Smoky Mountains National Park - The Simple Pleasures The Roaring Fork outside of Gatlinburg TN in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an amazing place to visit. The Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail follows this wonderful mountain river that is rich with natural beauty including waterfalls, historic homesteads, moss covered riverbed rocks, black bears and wildlife and more. Peaceful small waterfalls landscape shot in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. I found this beautiful waterfall with the stacked rocks just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Southern Appalachians during a digital photography workshop I was leading last October. I named this image "Harmony" because the word harmony means balance. I felt this image related to the word balance in so many ways including the rock stack that is balanced, the balance in the image composition, and the balance of man and nature coexisting. The beach at Botany Bay is an epic location for sure, a place where the ocean has claimed ground where mighty live oak trees once stood. Some of these weather beaten trees still stand tall in the ocean waters. The rising sun shrouded in colorful clouds behind one of these aging giants made for an incredible scene that I was grateful to witness.

Hurricane Irene made landfall at this beach the next morning and the scene was anything but peaceful. I really enjoyed visiting this great location where the water has sculpted the granite rocks over thousands of years leaving behind a carved appearance rich with potholes and geometric shapes.
