raccoons as art

based on a series of photos by ingrid taylor and myself, i've constructed a forest scene of soft light featuring three very cute little juvenile raccoons.

the trapp family deer

i dunno, it kinda has a 'sound of music' look, it just needs julie andrews to come prancing out singing. this is a local deer family photographed in the spring and digitally transported up to the pass between rico and telluride colorado. i should have put in an edelweiss or two.

desert fox by moonlight

possibly a red fox/ swift fox hybrid, typical of the open country of the southwest. here a fox tops a little hill to stand in full moonlight.

saint hubertus of the americas

the legend of st hubertus is that he saw a vision of a crucifix between the antlers of a stag he was about to slay, and he was so moved by the vision that he devoted himself to helping others for ever after. no word on whether the buck escaped harm. i'm not very spiritual myself and have seen many odd permutations of light and circumstance and i have imagined one here. mystical vision, or just an peculiar glow of light through the trees?

polar bear family variation

just an alternate vision of the bear family-- this time it's more open, more of a consideration of their likely habitat.

twilight along the brook, doe mule deer

laying low most of the day due to autumn's odious gunfire, a doe finally emerges from the thicket just before dark to browse along the stream. in flight across the background is a group of white-faced ibis.

sudden meeting / polar bear family

a chance meeting with a fine polar bear family.

riverside coyote golden twilight

here's an ol' thang, just reworked a bit. i saw a coyote working the riverside in grand teton national park a few years ago. he stood out so vividly against the snowy sandbar, and the last light bathed the scene in a golden glow.

gentle denizen - raccoon

an abandoned adobe house up the road from me is visited by a young raccoon. the lower window pane caught the reflections of the ground foliage while the upper seemed to reflect the summer colorado sky.

sunset on the ridge - bull elk

stepping out of the ponderosa forest near the continental divide, a bull elk takes in the vista and the last radiance of the day.

high country bull bison

In one of the valleys of the northern Yellowstone high country a burly bull bison eschews the safety of the herd to browse alone among the bunch grass and dank willow beside a small brook. A distant haze could either be a trace of morning mist or perhaps a hot spring.

late spring is calving season in yellowstone; young elk and bison can be viewed before the crowds of summer arrive.

lance of evening light / grizzly bear

this image is pretty much as i saw it (with of course my added painterly effects): an odd shaft of light pierced a snow-blue hillside in a radiant glow. the only difference was that in place of the bear, my dog 'midnight' was lumbering along there. i thought she very much resembled a bear so i painted in a griz that i'd photographed years ago in yellowstone. sorry midnight!

tiger portrait

to match the leopard, here's tiger in a similar repose, tucked away with his back to solid rock, but a warm sun full upon him. or her. whatever.

soft colors against a smooth face of rock, a leopard reclines peacefully until a sound in the distance causes him to look over his shoulder.

timber wolf

a chilly morning overlooking a mountain valley.

rhino in the dust

threatened by a shrinking habitat, desertification due to livestock grazing and global warming, plus of course the "flaunting"of an object of huge value to the unscrupulous may be leading the white rhino into the proverbial dust.

lady pronghorn

a female pronghorn (antelope) near the northgate at yellowstone-- in spring the grassland is verdant and the sun is warming.

markhor goat

okay, it's a zoo goat, but i digitally rescued him from the compound and dropped him into a colorado mountain scene-- he seems to like it. in reality sadly the markhors are native to Pakistan and Afghanistan and have been hunted to near extinction.

hillside elk impression

ice cave / tiger

a seep between giant boulders produces enormous icicles which became the backdrop for the placement of this upland bengal tiger. (i also used this background for a coyote painting).

spring doe in dawn light

when fog mingles with golden morning light the results can be radiant and envelope any subject in a picturesque glow. i wanted to capture a feeling of that with "spring doe in dawn light".

moonlight threat/ pronghorn buck

startled and standing, an older pronghorn buck peers across the prairie on a moonlit night.

big sky bull elk gathering

in the late fall after the rut, the big bulls tend to herd up separate from the cow elk. depicted is a little group in the morning fog under the ramparts of a typically wonderful western peak.

wind swept/ gemsbock

the oryx is well adapted to the desert, but no doubt the buffeting wind and sand can still be tiresome...

the allure of illicit apples

i caught this guy peeking under an apple tree in my yard. he's welcome to all the produce he wants!

gone is the ice pack

isn't every artist responsible for producing a few protest images here and there- when the confluence of concept and indignation merge?

cold refuge / coyote

a spring-like seep under some hillside boulders produced this ghoulish fanged apparition. in spite of the icy stalagmites, a young coyote finds a safe repose out of the wind.

pronghorn on the edge

a young pronghorn shows some reluctance to move along the bluff above a steep arroyo-- then to make matters worse, the mother spots something that gives her pause as well.

afternoon of the fawns

a pair of young deer appear along a ridge as the sun cuts across the thick summer meadow, buzzing with bees and fragrant with flowers.

equal denizen / coyote

folks out here shoot coyotes almost instinctively, but here: this is MY little farm. we live and let live. ever vigilante, a wind blown song-dog surveys a serene snowscape.

sun pours across a dew damp meadow as a doe and one of her fawns graze peacefully.
