Mt. Moran is dominating the scene to the right.

It's really worth it to get up early and get to Oxbow Bend just before dawn if you ever visit the park. As an added bonus it's a great place to watch wildlife early in the morning. One of the oodles of people photographing next to me mentioned the last time she was there a moose swam across the river right where I was taking my shot! We did see a LOT of moose in the Tetons, but sadly none decided to swim for me on this particular morning.

Aermotor Cloud Storm

I Spy Sky Eyes

Gazing GBH at Bosque

Garden of the Golly

Clepsydra Geyser Permutations

Phases of a Total Lunar Eclipse

A composite image featuring four phases of a total lunar eclipse. This is from the 2004 total lunar eclipse.

It was really cloudy in Colorado that night and I was severely disappointed that I was going to miss the lunar fun. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation surf on over to the Clear Sky Clock and locate the best viewing location you can drive to, it totally saved me here (lots of good general astronomy links there as well). We ended up driving out to a hole in the cloud cover and haze out in the Pawnee National Grassland in NE Colorado.

The eclipse itself was a stunning thing to see. My favorite part is when the moon passed through Earth's umbral shadow into totality. At the moment it hit totality a gazillion coyotes started howling at the moon all around us. What an evening. If you're now itching to know when the next show is, check here for a lunar eclipse schedule for the coming years.

This is one of my favorite photographs from my work. It was taken with a Nikon 4500 digiscoped through my Nikon Fieldscope 60 mm ED spotting scope. I hope you enjoy.

Grand Crescent Moon Sunset

A view of the setting crescent moon in the sunset taken just east of the Very Large Array (radio telescope, look for pics and info on the VLA soon) in Socorro County, New Mexico.

Magic Bosque Morn

Here a couple of Sandhill Cranes take flight to begin their day. This a 15 minute exposure of star trails above one of the main pools at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. I took this when it basically first looked fully dark outside and I was still able to catch color from the remains of the earlier sunset. The color is as it came out of the camera with noise reduction applied. I was amazed at my luck in catching an Iridium Flare in the upper left! You can tell the hotter stars by their streak's blue color, with cooler ones coming in more red.

Cascade Canyon from Jenny Lake

Cascade Canyon as seen from the shore of Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

Sandhill Crane Projectile

A wintering Sandhill Crane caught in mid-flight at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico.

Near Sandhill Symmetry

Cedar Waxwing Berry Paradiso

Post Dive Pied-Billed Grebe Shakeoff

I was fortunate enough at Bosque to see quite a few of these odd fairly small birds: the Pied-Billed Grebe. Here one is shaking off some water after emerging from a dive in late morning light. Here's a couple of fun facts courtesy of Cornell (linked above):

The Pied-billed Grebe is rarely seen in flight. It prefers to escape predators by diving, and it migrates at night. However, it can fly, and stray individuals have reached Hawaii and Europe.

The downy chicks can leave the nest soon after hatching, but they do not swim well at first and do not spend much time in the water in the first week. They sleep on the back of a parent, held close beneath its wings. By the age of four weeks, the young grebes are spending day and night on the water. For the first ten days their response to danger is to climb onto a parent's back. After that, when danger threatens, they dive under water.

Orchidaceae Inflourescence Explosion

We received this orchid as a gift from a friend. A truly remarkable building. The church was built in 1925 for area dude ranches and now is maintained within the Grand Teton National Park by St. John's Episcopal Church of Jackson, Wyoming.

Note the window inside of the chapel where you can just make out a cross.

Mormon Row Barn & Tetons in Mid-Morning Light

Firehole River Valley in Blue and Gold

One thing that amazed my wife and I about Yellowstone in the fall is how some of these thermal areas with lots of yellows, oranges and golds almost seamlessly blend into the background palette of fall grasses in all their glory.
