Along the Rift

Iceland’s Thingvellir National Park sits in a rift valley along the Mid Atlantic Ridge which is being split by the movement of the North American and Eurasian geological plates. Lake Thingvellir contains species of fish that are found nowhere else in the world. As you can, see along this rift the water is crystal clear. This section is easily accessible to tourists and is a popular spot for throwing coins into the water. Original photo.

The Little Church At Thingvellir

According to documented sources, a church was built at Thingvellir shortly after the acceptance of Christianity in the year 1000. King Olaf the portly of Norway sent wood and a church bell as a present for a church at Thingvellir in the year 1015 according to Snorri Sturluson's history of the Norwegian kings, Heimskringla. The church dates back to the latter part of the 14th century when it was dedicated to Olaf the wholly king of Norway. The present church was built and consecrated in 1859 and a new tower was built in 1907. It contains three bells, one old, another from 1697 and the third one was added on the 17th of June 1944, when the Icelandic republic was proclaimed on the Parliamentary Plains. Chiricahua

Chiricahua National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service located in the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona. It is famous for its extensive vertical rock formations. Geologists believe that it preserves the remains of an immense volcanic eruption that shook the region some 27 million years ago. The thick white-hot ash spewed forth from the nearby Turkey Creek Caldera, cooled and hardened into rhyolite tuff, laying down almost two thousand feet of dark volcanic ash and pumice, highly siliceous in nature which eventually eroded into the natural features visible that we see at the monument today. Triple Divide Panorama

Triple Divide Peak (8,020 feet (2,444 m)) is located in the Lewis Range, Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. It is a hydrological apex of the North American continent, where the Great and Laurentian divides meet at the summit of the peak. Thus, all water that falls at this point can flow to the Pacific, Atlantic, or Arctic oceans (when Hudson Bay is considered an Arctic tributary), making the locale (and surrounding Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park) one of the few places on the Earth whose waters feed three oceans. Mokuʻāweoweo is the summit crater of Hawaii's Mauna Loa volcano, the largest volcano on earth in terms of volume and area covered. It is an active volcano and, as of this writing, the lava level is about 200 feet below the surface, close enough to emit a red glow at night. Used a total of 4 photos to create this panorama.

A View For the Gods

Original photo taken in Haleakala National Park in Maui. The tallest peak of Haleakalā, at 10,023 feet (3,055 m), is Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill). From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 11.25 km (7 mi) across, 3.2 km (2 mi) wide, and nearly 800 m (2,600 ft) deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cones.

Meteor Crater

Meteor Crater in Winslow Arizona, lies at an elevation of about 1740 m (5709 ft) above sea level. It is about 1,200 m (4,000 ft) in diameter, some 170 m deep (570 ft), and is surrounded by a rim that rises 45 m (150 ft) above the surrounding plains. The center of the crater is filled with 210-240 m (700-800 ft) of rubble lying above crater bedrock.
