I went out reefnet salmon fishing over the weekend. The men in the towers spot the fish coming through an artificial reef and hand haul the salmon into the boat. This is an old Indian method of catching fish and is only practiced here in the San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest.

Reefnet Salmon Fishing

I went out reefnetting last weekend. This type of fishing is only done off Lummi Island in the Puget Sound. We were only open for pinks and had to release all sockeye salmon because of low returns. At one time there was maybe seventy "gear" out here now there are only about seven remaining. Reefnetting as a commercial venture is in great danger of becoming obsolete as the salmon are coming back in lower and lower numbers. Salmon reefnetters, Lummi Island, Washington

On Lummi Island they practice a form of salmon fishing known as reefnetting. There are only about 7 reefnet "gears" left in the world. To catch the salmon the fishermen must stand on towers with polarized sunglasses and actually see the salmon coming into the net. Then they bring up the net and hand haul the fish into the boat. It's a very strenuous way to make a living.

Fort Point, San Francisco, California

Underneath the Golden Gate Bridge is Fort Point. Fort Point has stood guard at the narrows of the Golden Gate for nearly 150 years. It has been called “the pride of the Pacific,” “the Gibraltar of the West Coast,” and “one of the most perfect models of masonry in America.” When construction began during the height of the California Gold Rush, Fort Point was planned as the most formidable deterrence America could offer to a naval attack on California. Although its guns never fired a shot in anger, the “Fort at Fort Point” as it was originally named has witnessed Civil War, obsolescence, earthquake, bridge construction, reuse for World War II, and preservation as a National Historic Site.

On Lummi Island, Washington in the Puget Sound a unique method of fishing for salmon so still practiced called reefnetting. It's an old native american way to catch salmon by building an artificial reef out of ropes and plastic grass. The fishermen stand in towers with Polarized sunglasses and have to see the fish come into the net in order to catch them. When the fish come into the net they yell "give 'er hell" and up comes the net and the fish are hand hauled into the live hold.

I visited the studio of a paper artist on Lummi Island and found this little scene of a maple leaf being flattened in an Asian book. The sepia color works well with the graphic nature of the photo.

Native American Canoe

At a local potlach for the Lummi Indians at an event called "Paddle to Lummi" I spotted this canoe bow and though ti would make an excellent vintage looking photograph. Cedar branches decorate the neck of this Northwest Native carved canoe.
