spartan hoplite

this simple graphic design art print is a tribute to the spartan hoplite. A hoplite was a citizen-soldier of the Ancient Greek City-states. They were primarily armed as spear-men and fought in a phalanx formation. The word hoplite (Greek: ὁπλίτης hoplitēs; pl. ὁπλίται hoplitai) derives from hoplon (ὅπλον, plural hopla ὅπλα), the type of the shield used by the troopers, although as a word "hoplon" could also denote weapons held or even full armament.

the medusa

"Gaze upon the eyes of the Gorgon". This print was inspired by the medusa created by my childhood hero, Ray Harryhausen. In Greek mythology, Medusa (Greek: Μέδουσα (Médousa), "guardian, protectress" was a gorgon, a chthonic female monster; gazing directly upon her would turn onlookers to stone. She was beheaded by the hero Perseus, who thereafter used her head as a weapon until giving it to the goddess Athena to place on her shield

gladius

the gladius was the roman short sword that conquered the world. after the legionairies would discharge their pilums, the gladius was their last line of defense. the gladius was strictly a stabbing sword and wiped out many an opponent from the battlefield. add this beautiful print to your sword collection in honor of another roma victa

THESEUS and the MINOTAUR

this print is a graphic treatment of the famous statue dedicated to theseus and the minotaur from ancient greek mythology. The Minotaur, as the Greeks imagined him, was a creature with the head of a bull on the body of a man or, as described by Ovid, "part man and part bull." He dwelt at the center of the Cretan Labyrinth, which was an elaborate maze-like construction built for King Minos of Crete and designed by the architect Daedalus and his son Icarus who were ordered to build it to hold the Minotaur. The historical site of Knossos, with over 1300 maze like compartments is identified as the site of the labyrinth. The Minotaur was eventually killed by Theseus, the son of Aegeas.

THESEUS and the CENTAUR

graphic treatment of the famous statue of theseus killing a centaur done is subtle shades of browns and blues. In Ovid's Metamorphoses Theseus fights against and kills Eurytus, the "fiercest of all the fierce centaurs" at the wedding of Pirithous and Hippodamia.

a simple graphic design actually taken from a 15ft tall spartan statue i designed for a local school. i wanted to really get across the effect of how polished a spartan's bronze armor would look. i've been a huge ancient greece fan since i was a kid and saw the movie "300 spartans". the shading was done in corelpaint, to anyone who truly enjoys ancient sparta and would treasure one of these prints i can only say "come and take them"

ROMAN EMPEROR, NERO IN STONE

beautiful black and gray graphic bust of rome's most notorious ruler, NERO. Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (15 December AD 37–9 June AD 68), born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, also called Nero Claudius Caesar Drusus Germanicus, was the fifth and last Roman emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. Nero was adopted by his great uncle Claudius to become heir to the throne. As Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, he succeeded to the throne on 13 October 54, following Claudius's death. Nero ruled from 54 to 68, focusing much of his attention on diplomacy, trade, and increasing the cultural capital of the empire. He ordered the building of theaters and promoted athletic games. His reign included a successful war and negotiated peace with the Parthian Empire (58–63), the suppression of the British revolt (60–61) and improving relations with Greece. The First Roman-Jewish War (66–70) started during his reign. In 68 a military coup drove Nero from the throne. Facing execution, he committed suicide on 9 June 68. Nero's rule is often associated with tyranny and extravagance. He is known for a number of executions, including those of his mother and adoptive brother, as the emperor who "fiddled while Rome burned" and as an early persecutor of Christians. This view is based upon the main surviving sources for Nero's reign—Tacitus, Suetonius and Cassius Dio. Few surviving sources paint Nero in a favorable light. Some sources, though, including those mentioned above, portray him as an emperor who was popular with the common Roman people, especially in the East. The study of Nero is problematic as some modern historians question the reliability of ancient sources when reporting on Nero's tyrannical acts.

all hail caesar augustus, the first emperor of rome, adopted nephew of julius caesar. enjoy your own pax romana when you hang this stately portrait in your own den or roman villa. this was a really fun piece to do, first i took a photograph of a bust of caesar augustus, then i did a coreltrace on it to get the simple graphic shapes, lastly i added the text and gave it a purple tint to symbolize roman royalty.

spartan in black

this black, gray and red print is a tribute to the fearless spartans from ancient greece. The Spartan armies, though usually quite small, were well-disciplined and all but irresistible in combat. Each citizen soldier was inspired by the resolve to win or die. The Spartan mother, when she gave her son his shield, would say: "Bring back this shield yourself or be brought back upon it," referring to the manner in which the dead were carried on their shields from the battlefield. Among Sparta's most heroic achievements was the stand taken by its fighting men at the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, during the Persian Wars

ARES, GOD of WAR

this blue tone print is a graphic tribute to ARES, the Olympian god of warfare, he is more accurately the god of bloodlust, or slaughter personified: "Ares is apparently an ancient abstract noun meaning throng of battle, war." He is an important Olympian god in the epic tradition represented by the Iliad. The reading of his character remains ambiguous, in a late 6th-century funerary inscription from Attica: "Stay and mourn at the tomb of dead Kroisos/ Whom raging Ares destroyed one day, fighting in the foremost ranks".
