Leo Bruce Hempell, Brooklyn, NY Member Since June 2008 Artist Statement Until I was sixteen I lived in and around Banff Alberta, and the Kootenays, in western Canada so the Rocky Mountains were my playground. I went to high school at Kitsilano, and to university at UBC, both in Vancouver BC.
While at UBC I had my own night club photo business at two clubs in Vancouver's Chinatown, the Kublai Khan, and the WK Gardens. I also did weddings, home portraits, publicity and events for contacts arising out of the club business, and as a photographer and editor for Slipstick, the UBC Engineers yearbook. Student summers I shot landscapes, some of which I sold through a stock agency, and postcards for Grant Mann Lithographers, while working as a surveyor all over BC. Student winters I went days to school, nights I spent in my darkroom developing the night club work, mailing out the prints in folders the next morning before going to school. I also proofed wedding pictures for two other local photographers after classes.
After graduating UBC in 1963 I worked as an engineer, first designing aircraft electronics, followed by many sucessful commercial and consumer electronic products, some of them within my own company. About 1985 my new house burned to the ground, destroying most of my photography. Displayed here is some of my work since then, but included are some surviving 35mm Kodachromes and B&W negs from the 50's 60's and 70's. I have been lucky to travel with my job and so displayed here are photographs from Africa, Mexico, Indonesia, England, Canada, Romania, and the USA.
I am now retired from engineering, giving my full time now to photography. What a beautiful place the planet is, I hope we don't spoil it any more than we have allready. I currently live in Brooklyn with Clarice, where I am shooting New York City, and working occasional commercial photo assignments. I also sell my work at the Brooklyn Bridge and at flea and craft markets when the weather permits. You can call me at 630-890-4843 anytime, to find out where I am.
A limited selection of large prints and photo coffee mugs are available at Big Apple Art Gallery in Manhattan. Magnets and mugs are also sold at Best of Brooklyn, the visitors gift shop inside Brooklyn Borough Hall. Others wha sell my work are Stewarts Stand, Frame Works, and Pedros in the DUMBO district of Brooklyn New York. Products are also available on-line using links on my website leobruce.com.
