DescriptionAscending the summit of Mauna Kea (White Mountain) on the Big Island takes one closer to the spiritual and the supernatural realm. To Native Hawaiians Mauna Kea is kupuna to them - it was here long before us, and therefore it is our 'elder.'
Standing in snow in July in Hawaii looking out upon the volcano cones was like being on another planet. It was a very humbling experience.
Joni Gruber, Deep South Member Since August 2007 Artist Statement In addition to my photographs and altered digital photos, prints of my encaustic paintings are available here. Encaustic is an ancient medium of beeswax, damar resin and pigments that is applied in its molten state. I am especially fond of using iridescent pigments and I use gessoed wood panels for my substrates.
Original paintings are for sale - please inquire at firstname.lastname@example.org and for more information visit www.jonigruber.com. Thanks!
