Description Edwin Deakin's (18381923) oil painting of the Santa Barbara Mission was done sometime around 1880. Deakin was the first artist to romanticize the missions and completed 3 complete sets of paintings of the missions - two in oil paints and one in watercolors. Deakin emigrated from England to San Francisco in 1870.
