James Mingo, Brooklyn Member Since March 2010 Artist Statement I was born in Georgetown, Guyana. As a child I was encouraged to draw and paint with watercolors by my Aunt. I painted flowers, birds, landscapes, and objects that I found around our home. I immigrated to the United States and later moved to Toronto, Canada.
Supporting myself as a graphic designer, I continued to draw and paint in my spare time. I began using colored pencils in my work after receiving a set of Prismacolor pencils as a gift from a friend of mine.. I enjoyed the textures and tonal effects that can be created using colored pencils. I work by building layers using strong vibrant colors to achieve the desired results. Much of my work is inspired by music, especially jazz.
Recently, I began experimenting with digital art using Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter, the majority of my work comes from combination of drawing, photography and digital painting to produce the finish piece of art.
My art is a culmination of over twenty-five years of experience working in New York City, Toronto, Canada, Atlanta, Georgia, and Orlando, Florida. Presently living and working from my studio in Brooklyn, New York.
