Description 2010 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved
_________________________________________ A detail of the sitting room in the Thankful Arnold House in Haddam, Connecticut. Originally built in 1794, it was redesigned twice more with add-ons through 1810. As it stands now it provides a glimpse into the life of the widow Thankful Arnold in the 1820's. The house remained in the Arnold family until sometime in the 1960's, when it was deeded to the Haddam Historical Society, which has preserved it since._________________________________________Note the single tallow candle for lighting - darkness must have put a definitive end to most practical activity. The front door, partially visible on the extreme right, opens directly into the room, which is not large and must have seemed even smaller when the door was open. Also, the irregular plumb lines of the long inset window, not uncommon in Early American houses that have settled over the centuries, give the room a somewhat surreal atmosphere._________________________________________Digital oil painting from an original photograph shot from the inside during a pouring rain, June 12, 2010.
