Elaine Plesser, Southern California Member Since January 2007 Artist Statement I have been drawn to visual experiences since I was a child. Looking at nature, colors, textures, shapes and patterns that occur in the world around me have given me endless hours of pleasure.
I began with the traditional arts of watercolor, acrylics and photography as a means to express myself. I am now exploring the world of digital painting, starting with photographs that I take of images that intrique me and then manipulating, enhancing and rearranging elements in the computer to come up with my own interpretation of how I would like it to be seen.
With my digital paintings, I am asking the viewer to come along on a journey with me to explore a different way of seeing reality. While much of my work looks like realistic paintings, all involve a modification from reality...in some it is changing an element to be a different color, changing the relationship of positions and sizes of elements, adding an element from a different image and shifting the center of attention to a different area.
When taking a snapshot many people are disappointed in the result because they felt that the actuality of the location was much better than the picture...they remember the totality of the experience, but the camera records only a part. In my work I can join together a multiplicity of impressions to create a whole. It can help the viewer feel they are part of the image, pressing their nose into a flower to smell the fragrance to feeling the warmth of sunshine as the light sparkles through the leaves. I hope you enjoy your journey through my world.
