Description Like much of my artwork, this was inspired by the styles of Nouveau art and vintage art posters. Again I demonstrate my experimentation with lettering in this drawing by choosing to create the letters with dark colors instead of my usual lighter choices. I tried different outlines in this artwork and especially like the white lines encasing the lemons in the background. Materials used were prismacolor color pencils, watercolors, and gouache paint.
Jennifer Johnson, Murfreesboro, TN Member Since June 2009 Artist Statement My name is Jen and I am a freelance illustrator/cartoonist located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Most of my work is influenced by Nouveau art, vintage art posters, Impressionism, Japanese graphic novels and calligraphy. I have been drawing since I was about three or four years old and other than a few art classes in high school and college, I am entirely self taught. My parents were always impressed with my work (of course) and even when my mother was dying of cancer, she still wanted to see what I was currently drawing in my notepad. For a decade afterward, my father continued to push me to pursue art until he too passed away a few years ago. Now I do art for myself, not for my parents, not for my friends, and not for school. I would like for people to see my work and take something away from it, whether it's a new idea, a new perspective, or a new appreciation for a style that they never considered before. My writing is inspired by many different styles such as stream-of-consciousness or understatement. Topics that usually pop up in my work are gender, feminism, humanitarianism, etc. I also try to aspire to zen and Taoism and use their teachings to keep me going. I hope you enjoy my work.
