Artist Statement MISSION

Rice Cooker Studios exists to create content that will educate, empower and inspire. Our goal is to connect Filipino-Americans to their rich colorful heritage. Our focus is on creating books, cartoons, comics, graphics, toys... anything for young people that increases ethnic awareness and promotes cultural pride.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Raised in Virginia Beach, VA, Tim Saguinsin spent much of his childhood with a pencil and a paintbrush in hand. He continued on with his artistic endeavors attending high school at the Governor's Magnet School for the Arts in the Hampton Roads and later attended the Maryland Institute, College of Art where he received his BFA in General Fine Arts in 1995.

After graduating, Tim traveled overseas to London, England where he transformed his talents of painting and sculpture to animation and graphics to create educational CD-ROMs. While in London, Tim co-founded re-Animate Educational Software producing over thirty awarding winning educational products. After 5 years working overseas, he returned to America in 2001. Tim is currently an Art Director at an education company in the DC Metro area where he continues to educate through graphics and animation.

In 2006, Tim founded Rice Cooker Studios to help cultivate his artistic endeavors. Initially started to promote his freelance graphics and animation capabilities, Rice Cooker Studios took off and has turned into an artistic endeavor. In the past two years, Rice Cooker Studios has created animations for Apl.de.Ap of the Black Eyed Peas and Pnoy Apparel and is looking into development of cartoons for our young Filipino-Americans. Also in 2006, Rice Cooker Studios published http://www.barriors.com/, the first online web comic about growing up Filipino-American. The website has had much success with hundreds of thousand hits and plenty of positive feedback from the Filipino-American community.

Tim has enormous pride about his cultural heritage. His latest endeavor is a personal animated short titled "Teach a Man to Fish." He has also created a series of prints that reflect some of the Filipino scenes and characters in "Teach a Man to Fish" as well as other imagery inspired through growing up American Filipino.

SENSE OF URGENCY

Since the birth of my son in late August, there is now a sense of urgency to create Filipino American content that he can grow up with. Searching the web, there isn't very much Filipino American content for children under the age of 12 other than clothing and apparel. My want is to create graphics and content for that missing part of our community—art, books, cartoons, comics, graphics, toys...
