DescriptionThe Great Gullby Howard Nemerov...Restless, rising at dawnI saw the great gull come from the mistTo stand upon the lawn. And there he shook his savage wingTo quiet, and stood like a high priestBird-masked, mantled in gray. Before his fierce austerityMy thought bowed down, imaginingThe wild sea-lanes he wandered byAnd the wild waters where he sleptStill as a candle in the crypt.Noble, and not courteous,He stared upon my green concerns. Then, like a merchant princeCome to some poor province, I'Who, looking all about, discernsNo spice, no treasure house,Nothing that can be madeDelightful to his haughty trade,And so spreads out his sail,Leaving to savage menTheir miserable regimen; So did he rise, making a galeAbout him with his wings,And fought his huge freight into airAnd vanished seaward with a cryA strange tongue but the tone clear
