Artist Statement BIOGRAPHY
Sally was born in New York and studied art at The Traphagen School of Fashion Design and Illustration in New York City. From there she began her professional art career as a fashion illustrator for a major department store.
Drawn to fabrics and textiles from her years as a fashion illustrator, Sally includes beautiful prints and textures in many of her paintings. Her work now spans beyond illustration and into the delicate watercolor brushstrokes and meticulous colored pencil renderings of her current representational paintings.
Growing up, she always had a love of creative projects. Her parents - especially her mother, who was a fashion designer - encouraged her to follow her passion for art.
As a fine artist, she began exploring different mediums. She enjoys working with colored pencil and expanded her work to include watercolor.
She was a guest author for artist, Lori McNee, when she wrote an article describing her technique with Colored Pencils.
Sally has studied at The Traphagen School of Fashion Design and Illustration, The Northern Westchester Center for the Arts, The Katonah Art Center and she has taken classes with Decorative Painter, Susan Harris, Prominent Artist, Illustrator and Parsons School of Design professor, Alan Reingold and Graphic Artist, John Pardo. Always enjoying the free flow of watercolor paintings, Sally is currently taking classes with watercolor artist, Cindy Sacks.
Sally resides in Westchester, New York's Hudson River Valley with her husband Ray.

It is gratifying to see what can be done with a blank sheet of paper and some paint or a few pencils.

I'm inspired by fabric and textiles from the time I worked as a fashion illustrator. To this day, I'm drawn to the intricate folds and patterns of fabric, and it often makes its way into my paintings. You'll see fabric draped in backgrounds, underneath objects, crumbled up in a basket, or as the sole focus of a work! I also love working with shadows and light, which is represented often in my work as well.

I find inspiration in everyday life and the things that interest me, even ordinary objects can be beautiful if we stop and really look at them.
