Mikell Van Der Laan, Nashville Member Since December 2008 Artist Statement Mikell F. van der Laan is a modern impressionist striving for the line between abstraction and reality. His oil on linen images are found in collections throughout the United States. Subtle hues and striking light over modern imagery are the subjects for which he is best known. He paints both commission and studio works in medium and large formats.
Mikell: an artist and engineer has devoted the better part of his life to creating compelling images to both live through and work with. Classically trained in Dallas Texas by both private and public art instruction, Mikell studied under Greg Metz as well as other inspirational and gifted artists that have made a profound mark on both art and social commentary. Mikell won early recognition in school for his artistic talent from various competitions and contests in and around the Dallas area and has only recently returned to painting after many years of doing graphical user interface design for giant faceless corporations.
Currently, Mikell lives on a small rural piece of property just north of Nashville, Tennessee located in the rugged Cumberland Plateau region of the Ohio River valley. From his studio, he can see many of the images you’ll find in his work. Living in close proximity to his subject allows constant study of its changing form and color over time.
