José Rodriguez, Whittier, Ca Member Since December 2006 Artist Statement José Rodriguez is an illustrator/artist specializing in custom portraits who is currently producing a distinctive series of automotive paintings. Working with acrylic paints and colored pencils, his pallet always consists of vivid colors and sharp contrasts blending together to bring his subjects to life.
Born and raised in Southern California, Jose’s studio is located in the Whittier home he has shared with his wife and son for more than twenty years.
For him, the fascinating world of art came to life at the tender age of four. Inspired by his father, Francisco, who served as his first art teacher, he knew early on that the paintbrush and easel would be his life-long tools. He has been drawing ever since.
While a senior in high school, Jose attended, Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, (before it was moved to Pasadena, CA). There he participated in program for high school students. The classes met on Saturday mornings. He studied life drawing.
He was mostly influenced by illustrators such as Norman Rockwell, J.C. Lyendecker, Bob Peak, Richard Amsel and Drew Struzan. In 1985, Jose was one of twenty five artists chosen to attend a week long workshop given by Drew Struzan. Drew’s work is widely recognized throughout the world for his movie poster art.
In 2005, His cover art for Lost in the Sun, garnered him a silver award in the Portfolios.com international awards.
José is a member of the Whittier Artists Association and Artist Community of Whittier (ACW).
