Artist Statement John Atkinson, born in San Diego, California, in 1947, grew up in Southern California and has lived in other parts of the West including Hawaii and in the Pacific Northwest in Astoria, Oregon before making Montana his home a little over 36 years ago.
John is an oil painter living and working in NW Montana in all seasons.
The concepts for his work come from his experiences,wanderings, and the environment around him. Sometimes the landscapes will include evidence of the human presence.

"For me, the rewards of being an artist are in the study, the work, and in the eventual sharing of the work. I work directly, trying to be truthful to nature in concept, values and colors. I try to see what is significant and to suggest essential detail. My passion is to keep getting better at understanding the nature of light and paint, and brush control, while painting any subject that calls to me.In experiencing my work , I hope you get a feeling for my enjoyment in the process and a shared appreciation of living on the Earth."-JA
