Ryan Schoeneman, Columbus Member Since August 2008 Artist StatementI guess you could say that I'm just another starving artist. While I believe that anyone can find an artistic outlet with which they excel, photography has always been a hobby and I've no professional experience. Personally, I couldn't think of a more terrible occupation than your run-of-the-mill professional photographer -- taking the same cut-and-paste senior portraits, wedding shots, and family pictures is not what appeals to me. It's cliche, but I want to travel the world someday with just a camera and a backpack, really get to see the world that I live in. To me, that's the essence of photography, seeing the world in a way that no one else has. When it comes down to it though, you needn't travel the world to see it. Hell, go sit out on your lawn for fifteen or twenty minutes -- leave the distractions behind as best you can. Many would see more of the world in those twenty minutes than they had that entire week. That is what photography is to me, it's a meditation on the beauty of our world.
I'm just testing the waters with selling a bit of my photography, don't really expect to make much, if anything at all. I know, it sucks that it costs money, I'd like to just make photographic prints on the side and give them to good homes. But, being on a college student budget, I'm finding myself digging through dorm couches to buy dinner or another roll of film. If it's any consolation, any prints or other merchandise that buy would be very much appreciated, and would help alleviate some of the day-to-day costs in a college student's life. Speaking of college, I'm currently attending The Ohio State University where I'm majoring in Honors in Plant Evolution and Ecology (EEOB) and minoring in both Zoology and Photography. I plan to pursue a graduate education in Botany (Though I'm still interested in zoology as well) and my greatest life goal is to earn a PhD in a field of the biological sciences (e.g. organismal botany).
