Amanda Spybey, The Gulf Coast, AL Member Since June 2008 Artist Statement I grew up in Alabama and won a few art contests for pencil on paper drawings and colored pencil drawings when I was a teenager. I remember the "ah-ha" moment I had while drawing my father's kitchen one Saturday morning, and having trouble with his faucet. It was "Draw what you actually SEE, not what you THINK you should see". The faucet finally looked the way I SAW IT!
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the Univ. of Alabama and spent the first 5 years of my career working as an Insurance-Fraud Investigator.
After becoming engaged to my wonderful husband in 1997, I decided to change careers and moved into the Mortgage Lending business. In 1999, I founded & still own a Mortgage Company, and now have a beautiful 3 1/2 year old son.
In between working and watching my son play golf (yes, golf!), I tried my hand at oil painting in 2000 as a release, and have been addicted to the art ever since. Being self taught I thought at the time, I can draw, so let's trying painting! Not quite the same, and much more difficult than I thought it would be, however I have progressed over the years. As Edgar Degas said: "Painting is very easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do."
