Artist Statement There is nothing more satisfying in this world than constantly learning and achieving something novel and amalgamating our observation and creativity to this ‘new learning’, in short- ‘living a life of an artist’.
Education may provide us a livelihood but it is our passion which keeps us going with full energy. I studied Microbiology and Molecular Immunology for pursuing a career in clinical research but I always carried on my passion of creative art and music. I won several prizes in art competitions during school and college which include two gold medals and first prize in all India camel colour contest. Recently in Scotland, I won a nationwide prize from Cadbury world, Bourneville, for designing a festive chocolate box cover.
My particular interest is in Indian art which is characterized by minute detailed patterns and intricate designs. Folk Indian art such as Madhubani and Warli connects us with nature and depicts the inseparable relationship of human and other flora and fauna. I was introduced to Indian art by my mother who is a constant inspiration in my life. During my childhood, I have had close interactions with native Madhubani artists in Bihar, where I got fascinated with this bright and colourful art form. I also participated in a workshop of Madhubani art recently (Apr 2011) in National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad.
I polished my painting skills during my art courses in acrylic/oil painting (portrait and landscape) under the guidance of Scottish artist Derek McGuire and abstract art from Paul Keir in prestigious Edinburgh College of arts. I have a flare for keen observation and learning new art forms. I was fortunate to be selected among 20 Scotland based artists for exhibiting my work in Edinburgh festival and Leith festival art expo (2009). I exhibited my art in ocean terminal mall, various libraries in city of Edinburgh and Indian community events in Aberdeen and Glasgow. I was invited to take workshops on Madhubani and Mandala painting by different charity organisations and Reiki groups in Edinburgh.
My mantra is ‘creativity and innovation’. I personally believe that art should not be bound to just native genres, I constantly endeavour for creating fusion between different art forms and experimenting and blending with colours. A successful example of this approach was creating traditional Christmas card designs and Scottish motives such as thistle in Madhubani art style. My Warli art designs painted on abstract art base was also an innovative effort which was vastly appreciated during my exhibitions. I have also incorporated mughal designs of tress and flowers in Madhubani painting. I am very fond of using new trendy colours such as turquoise, mauve, aqua green, peach etc. in my artwork.
