DescriptionThis print is a reproduction of Matthew Fontaine Maury's Whale Chart. Lieutenant M.F. Maury (1806–1873) was the chief the U.S. Naval Observatory and one of the most important nautical thinkers of his day. He conceived of the Whale Chart in the 1840s to aid the whaling community. Today his Whale Chart is a fascinating graphic enjoyed by many. From Captain McKenzie to Lieut. Maury. New Bedford, October 20th 1851:'The Whale Chart is a precious jewel; it seems to have waked up the merchants and masters to the practical utility of your researches in their behalf; there is not, and cannot be one opinion, and that highly favorable: it is sought for by all interested in whaling.'
HistoryShots Graphics Member Since January 2007 Artist Statement We create award-winning graphics that tell stories about subjects, time periods and events. Our purpose is to inform and entertain you with intense content embedded in an elegant design. Most of our graphics are originals, created in collaboration with a graphic design firm. A few designs are reproductions of restored antique graphics. Each graphic is created by integrating detailed content and data with a beautiful design. Our works are developed with great care, objectively presenting accurate data derived from reliable sources.
Our goal is to build a large catalog of graphics that cover a wide range of topics. This is a long-term venture because the creation process is lengthy, but we enjoy the journey from raw idea to completed print. In addition to learning more about the subject matter, we learn more about information design with every new graphic we develop. We hope you buy our prints, hang them on your walls, and share them with your friends. Thank you for visiting us.
