Nancy Grice, Maine and New Zealand Member Since June 2008 Artist Statement Nancy Grice has been a full-time professional artist since graduating from Massachusetts College of Art with a degree in painting. She enjoyed a long and successful career in murals and fine decorative painting, working for architects and designers in the Northeast. Now focusing on her own studio painting, Nancy has traveled to Maine, the Southwest, South Carolina, Ireland and New Zealand for inspiration and landscape material.
Nancy is experimenting with the format of landscape paintings. She often works directly from nature, choosing landscapes that have a sense of sublime spaciousness and light. Using her direct painting as source material, she then creates a unique and innovative style of work that combines landscapes into the geometric framework of a Mandala pattern. The Mandala, or “Yantra” designs are ancient eastern meditative patterns used to create a deeper sense of awareness. The paintings created this way have a strong centering and meditative effect. One can focus through multiple levels of perception in the scene, triggering a new perspective for the artist and the viewer.
