Artist Statement Brad Vance has lived in Arizona for 23 years. A scientist by training and profession, Brad holds an A.A. in Liberal Arts and Sciences, a B.A. in English Literature, a B.S. in Geology, and an M.S. in Structural Geology. After working as an environmental and mining consultant, Brad launched Planet Red Productions: a multi-faceted company that integrates Earth science education and communication of science through art and photography. His research as an undergraduate and graduate student at Arizona State University focused on the evolution of mountain ranges and the micro-structures imprinted in the rocks and minerals of Arizona and the Southwest. Brad captures the innate beauty and artistry in the geological sciences by utilizing the tools of petrography: high-powered magnification and the manipulation of light as it passes through microscopic thin sections of rocks collected from around the world.
